Audition 2025 & Beta moving very slowly

The program is running very slowly on various simple tasks -- merging clips, importing a file, moving clips, cutting and pasting -- the beach call starts spinning and the tinyest task takes several minutes.  Have tried deleting backups, closing all other apps, watching Activity Monitor, shutdown and restart.  Problem persists, seems worse later in the day.  It's getting impossible to maintain a smooth workflow.
