P: HDR export does not obey size limit

This might be a bug in LRC, using v. 14.0.1 on MacOS 15.0.

When I export a RAW file as a regular JPG with ProPhoto RGB profile and select "Limit File Size To:", LRC obeys the limit (say, 15,000 K).

However, the moment I check "HDR Output" in that Export dialog box, LRC outputs a JPG that's much larger (in my case, 112 MB).

(My original is a ~200 MB RAF raw file.)

What's going on here? Why is LRC ignoring the filesize limit checkbox when outputting HDR profile images?

Thanks.

It looks like this bug is in the Camera Raw code and has been logged with the CR team. I am leaving this post in Lightroom Classic for increased visibility.

Thank you for the report.

Probably because editing and exporting in HDR is a little bit more complicated than simply selecting a different profile. Read this:

https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2023/10/10/hdr-explained and then this: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/using/gain-map.html

By the way: exporting a JPG image in ProPhotoRGB is a very bad idea. First of all it will look horrible in apps that do not use color management, and secondly ProPhotoRGB is a huge color space, and way too large for the 8 bits/color that JPG only supports. Even if the app you use to view such image does support color management, the image will most likely look bad because of banding.

There could be a warning against combining ProPhoto RGB and JPEG in the export window.

Yes, there could be, but I think it is the responsibility of the user, not of Adobe, to not use ProPhotoRGB if they have no idea what that is. How many warning messages should Lightroom show? "Do not delete your catalog". "Do not delete your images". "Do not reformat your memory card before you downloaded the images". "Do not pour hot coffee over the keyboard when you are using Lightroom Classic". "Do not pour hot coffee over the keyboard after you have quit Lightroom Classic either". "Do not even pour cold coffee over the keyboard". "Do not think you should do everything we did not tell you not to do".

You are probably right, @JohanElzenga . Adobe is not everyone's protector. Users should have a reasonable level of knowledge.
