Button action to link to url
I am wondering if there is a way for the url to launch in a new window when clicked as to not confuse the learner and allow them to easily return to the course?

You can set the url to launch in a new window by clicking the triangle next to the url:
Not confusing the user and easily allowing them to return to the course is a browser configuration issue!
You may want to investigate techniques for setting the size and position of the new window, but for the most part you're dependent on the user closing the window and returning to the course without being distracted by something shiny like new email or kitten pictures!
