We are trying to create self-paced slides that have buttons that control the visibility of parts of the slide. We are having trouble making the videos and shapes go invisible until the button is hit.

Can you explain your present work flow? You can hide any object for output, using the eye icon on the Properties panel, but I mostly prefer to hide objects using the On Enter action of a slide, because that way the objects are also hidden when returning to the slide. Use the Success action of the button to make the objects visible. You don't tell which version of Captivate you are using? Since version 7 there are shared actions, particularly useful for hide/show situations because the object parameters can be anything: any object or even a group.

We are using Captivate 9, and we are beginners.
We have a 'comic-book' feel to our design and only want certain portions to be visible at the start of the slide. We have arrows we are using for buttons so that on success of pressing them, the hidden portions will appear.
I tried creating an advanced action for this, and all my elements are grouped appropriately, but they still don't work.

Do hide those objects with the On Enter action of the slide. Put a screenshot of the timeline, with your buttons in your answer. Same for a screenshot of the advanced action. Did you download the patch for CP9? How do you test: do use Preview in Browser or Preview HTML in Browser, best Preview methods.
