More than one quiz per course?

Explorer ,
Aug 04, 2017 Aug 04, 2017

I have a client who wants to have a quiz at the end of each of 4 modules in a 75 screen course. That means that quiz questions are grouped in sets of 3 throughout the course. The client wants it set so that if the learner fails the quiz, a Retake button appears and he goes back to the start of the quiz. Unfortunately, if I use only one quiz, that would send the learner all the way back to the module 1 quiz - and then forward through the remainder of the course content again. The client does not want a Review area either.

I know the easy option is to suggest moving all of the questions to the end of the course.  And that may be the solution.  I remember it was difficult (if not impossible) to have more than one quiz in previous Captivate versions. Has that gotten any better in 2017? I have not had this kind of request in a while, which is why I have not explored it in Captivate 2017 - until now.

Hi Chuck

The requirement for one quiz per course is a SCORM requirement, not due to Captivate.

If you need to transfer each quiz result to a LMS the solution is to put the quizzes in separate CP-files and call them from the main file.

If it is OK to have only the summary result of all quizzes transmitted to the LMS, it is possible to have intermediate score slide for the learner in the course. See: Intermediate Score Slides - Captivate blog

As for the Review 'area' (hope this was a typo, or did you mean the Review functionality?): it is only needed during review for non-answered or incompletely answered questions. However the review area in the score slide is needed for the Success/Failure grade message.

The default Retake functionality will always clear all answers, reset the quizzing system variables and send the learner to the first scored slide. Navigating over content slides if the quiz slides are not in sequence can be done easily with a conditional advanced action checking the value of the system variable cpQuizInfoAttempts. If that variable ==1 the content slides don't have to be skipped but if it is >1 they have to be skipped.

Using Quizzing System Variables - Captivate blog

Alternative is of course to create custom question slides instead of using the default quiz slides. Lot more work!

Lieve,

Thanks for that great explanation. I'm going to save it for future reference because I have an upcoming project to create 6 courses, each with several modules, and I will likely need it.

As for this course, the client has a course with quiz in SL2 and they are hoping we can mimic that functionality, look and feel in Captivate. I think it's one of those 'if it doesn't cost anything to do it, that would be good' but if we tell it's an additional cost, they may not be so worried about it.

But we will clarify with them for sure.

Thanks.

Could you try breaking that file up into separate modules with quizzes and combining them with the MultiSCO packager?

We've done this previously with the quiz for each module being a separate file and it's worked. Can't test this at home without an LMS, but I can try testing next week.

Not sure if that is an option for your needs, but figured I would suggest it. Good luck!

-K.

Not sure our client would like that. We're checking with them on Monday.
