Table of Contents navigation question in Captivate 5.5

Hi - I'm a fairly new user of Captivate (5.5.), and hope that someone can answer this question. I'm trying to set up a table of contents with navigation that will not let users go to slides that they have not yet viewed, but still enable users who have left and re-entered a course go back to any previous slide that they've viewed. Here are some details:

* I'm publishing the course using the SCORM 2004 setting, and testing it in SCORM Cloud and our LMS (Cornerstone)

* The table of contents navigation is set only to "Navigate visited slides only."

* After reading as many of the related posts as I could find on this forum, I've been able to get bookmarking to work - that is, the course will take the user back to where he or she left off. And by using the InfoSemantics TicTOC widget, when a user returns to the course, all previously viewed slides are checked off in the table of contents.

* However, whatever I've tried, a user who leaves and goes back into a course can only navigate back to the first slide, not to any of the other slides he or she already viewed. I'd like for our users to be able to go back to any previous slide they viewed (for example, to review the section just before the one where they left off, or to review any part of the course for reference after completing it).

Is there a combination of settings, or a widget somewhere, that will let you both limit forward navigation to visited slides only, while still allowing users to go back to any previously viewed slide after exiting and re-entering a course? And this would need to work in an LMS.

Thanks for any advice you can give!

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Skin Editor TOC setting for viewing only visited slides is NOT something you can use when working with an LMS because it relies on the bookmarking data stored via the Self-Paced Learning bookmarking method.

This gets automatically disabled as soon as you select any LMS reporting options because Captivate will be expecting you to use Resume Data bookmarking instead.

Resume Data bookmarking data from the LMS gets fed back to the module when the user re-enters and will correctly show ticks against TOC items that were visited in previous user sessions viewing the same uncompleted module. But I haven't seen the navigation restrictions for visited slides get reapplied.  (But maybe that's just the LMS I'm working on??)

From what i understand in the discussion, there are two types of bookmarking methods in the Captivate:

1. Self-Paced Learning Bookmarking

2. Resume Data Bookmarking

Self-Paced Learning Bookmarking Method is disabled once LMS Reporting option is set.

Hope someone can clarify further:

1. How to turn on the Resume Data Bookmarking? I don't see any GUI for me to set.

2. If i don't turn on Self-Paced Learning Bookmarking, I won't be able to achieve Bookmarking with the LMS Reporting setting is on. So, hope someone can kindly share how to achieve bookmarking without self-paced being turned on under LMS.

"Navigate only to visited Slides" shall be functional, even i close and reenter the course. This shall be the bug in Captivate product, if it can't. Without any offence, there shall not be any reason/excuse to tell the users that "Navigate only to visited Slides" can only work if LMS Reporting is not set. LMS and Captivate file is like butter and bread. How to do e-learning without LMS Reporting? In fact, "Navigate only to visited Slides" cannot work also if LMS Reporting is off. My customer insists to have this feature to apply and also to have reporting of "Completed/Incomplete" back to LMS, considered fair request. Hope Captivate team can help.

I purchased Captivate 6 and 8 licenses.

Do you have a Quiz in the file? And are you using the bookmarking by the LMS or by the TOC?

I do have a quiz in the file - at the the end, to pass completion to the LMS.

I think I'm using bookmarking by the LMS, rather than the TOC, but I'm not sure - what would the different settings be for those?

The self-paced learning option, which is the bookmarking by TOC, will store a cookie on the user's PC. Whereas by default the option is to bookmark by LMS.

What were the settings for the quiz? Did you perhaps choose the option 'User must pass quiz' for Required? This will cause navigation troubles.

Really think it is linked to the Quiz. You could extend the quiz scope to have all of the file in it, by attaching a small score to an interactive object on the first slide.

I did have the self-paced learning option checked, so I unchecked it. I did not have "user must past quiz" as required (it's set as optional). I tried adding an interactive button to the first slide and giving it a score. But after re-publishing, I still can only go back to the first slide (not any previously viewed slide) if I stop and re-enter the course. Here are the settings:

Quiz Reporting:

Manifest:

LMS Customization:

Quiz Settings:

Quiz Pass/Fail:

Settings for the interactive object on the first slide:

Settings for the "quiz" on the last slide:

Thanks so much for helping me with this.
