Question

Issues importing and exporting video - Media Encoder will not run

Hi All,

I am using Captivate 7 (7.0.0.118 to be exact).

I have both Media Encoder CC, Media Encoder CS6 (I am assuming that this was installed with Presenter 10.0) and Media Encoder CC 2014 installed locally. In part, the 2014 version is there because I also subscribe to Creative Cloud, and the version of Premiere that I got from it uses Media Encoder CC 2014.

Captivate can't seem to communicate with Media Encoder CC...whenever I bring in standard video files (e.g. MP4s), Captivate tries to launch Media Encoder CC to convert the files to FLV. It fails EVERY TIME. No problem: I use Format Factory (which I have to say is way better and far less flaky than Encoder), and Captivate is then happy to bring in my converted FLVs.

The biggest problem arises when I go to export my project as HTML5 and Flash. The Flash version works fine, but the HTML 5 version is an epic fail. I get this error message every time:

Warning(s)

SlideVideo_1 'C:\Users\petafayc\Documents\Postgraduate Orientation\Journal Articles\Save time reading chapter and article titles - interactive\Attempt 2\Journal titles interactive\vr\Vi1.flv' Conversion to MP4 Failed

SlideVideo_2 'C:\Users\petafayc\Documents\Postgraduate Orientation\Journal Articles\Save time reading chapter and article titles - interactive\Attempt 2\Journal titles interactive\vr\Vi3.flv' Conversion to MP4 Failed

SlideVideo_3 'C:\Users\petafayc\Documents\Postgraduate Orientation\Journal Articles\Save time reading chapter and article titles - interactive\Attempt 2\Journal titles interactive\vr\Vi5.flv' Conversion to MP4 Failed

SlideVideo_4 'C:\Users\petafayc\Documents\Postgraduate Orientation\Journal Articles\Save time reading chapter and article titles - interactive\Attempt 2\Journal titles interactive\vr\Vi7.flv' Conversion to MP4 Failed

SlideVideo_5 'C:\Users\petafayc\Documents\Postgraduate Orientation\Journal Articles\Save time reading chapter and article titles - interactive\Attempt 2\Journal titles interactive\vr\Vi9.flv' Conversion to MP4 Failed

The files/projects listed below are linked to the open project. The linked files/projects may require exporting.

This project contains links to external files or projects. After publishing, ensure that you copy all referenced files to the output folder and all referenced projects with their corresponding HTML files to the callees folder in the output folder.

When Captivate is publishing, Media Encoder CC opens as it should, but it just sits there doing nothing. My suspicion is that my multiple versions of Encoder are confusing matters. However, I am in a bit of a bind. I can't (as far as I can tell) tell Captivate to use a different version of Encoder. I can uninstall CS6 and CC 2014, but if that causes issues with my other Adobe products it is going to involve a lot of 'dear local IT man - please reinstall Encoder CS6' and/or 'redownload CC 2014 from Creative Cloud (which is currently stuck in limbo saying it will update and stays at 0%, so good luck getting anywhere with that)'.

I have tried manually converting the FLV video files to MP4s and locating them in the publish zip folder. I  tried matching up the location and file names in the publish zip folder as per the error message (e.g. naming the MP4 version Vi1.mp4) AND using the original file names used in the project (e.g.'Read smarter - titles 1.mp4') . I have tried locating the MP4 files in the main zip folder, as well as in the 'vr' folder (the error message seems to suggest that the 'vr' folder is where these files should live). Nothing works. However, I can chuck the PDF in to the ZIP folder (see bottom of error message), and that works just fine.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Pete

First things first. You need to upgrade your version to 7.0.1.232 from here.

Adobe - Adobe Captivate Support Center : Downloads

Not sure if I missed in your post, but have you tried launching the right version of Media Encoder separately and let CP detect it when it tries to convert the videos?

Hi Sreekanth,

Yes, I tried launching Media Encoder CC first, but still no success. I'll try downloading and installing the update now.

Cheers,

Peta
