When I download a book from my public library I can open it in digital editions 4.5 but when I transfer it to my device (kobo) and try to open it on the kobo it says "This book is protected by DRM. Because you previously deauthorized your eReader, you need to re-import the book using Adobe Digital Editions." I tried erasing authorization and setting git up again but it still won't work. Erased and downloaded a new edition of ADE, that didn't work either. Tried different books and libraries but still have problem. Called kobo and after troubleshooting with them they say it as ADE problem. Please please please help! Thank you!
This thread is old but incase anyone is suffering from the same problem here in January 2023. I have finally figured out a hack to get my Kobo to work.
For the record, I have tried everything: De/Re Authorizing, deleting books, overdrive account vs adobe account, etc. I couldn't use ADE V3 as my Mac is running 64 bit and it's not supported. I thought I was hooped until I came across this in my hours of searching:

So I too am having this issue with my wife's Kobo Touch. Worked with 4.5 2wks ago then stopped with the new book we got yesterday. ADE3.0 won't run on my Windows 10 system. I have tried reauthorizing ADE with my OverDrive login and same results. Not sure where to go from here. Any suggestions please!

There is a really easy solution to the Adobe Editions problem. I went out and purchased a Kobo Libra and it connects directly to the library through Overdrive and you no longer have to endure the Adobe Editions problem to download books. It took me many angonizing hours of trying to fix this annoying problem and in the end I gave up.

I'm shocked to see that this issue goes back so many years with still no tried and tested fix to the issue from Adobe. I too am having a similar issue. I am able to download books from my library and they work perfectly with ADE, but when I download a book from Indyreads, which is also through my library, those books won't work on my Kobo. I get the same error that everyone else seems to get. I have read back through everyone's posts and have tried so many different things, but still cannot get anything to work. I'm wondering if there is possibly some setting that I may have overlooked? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tracey5D8D.
If you haven't tried it already, Margriet's method (posted above) works for me: uploading the ePub to my Kobo Clara via Adobe, then uploading the PDF to my Kobo Clara, opening the PDF first, then opening the EPub I want to read. Here's a copy of Margriet's post -- I hope this works for you.

I use ADE 4.5 with another trick I read a while back on this forum: If the epub book doesn't open om my Kobo H20, I download the PDF of the same book from the Internet Archive. Then I transfer the PDF to my eReader and the epub AGAIN, making two DUPLICATES (do not overwrite) of the same title.
After this, the first epub still won't open (cover is black) but the second epub and te PDF will open without a problem. This trick is less invasive then installing a new version so I would suggest people try this first. Not sure if this will work always but it has worked for me several times now.

Thank you so much for this info Nan5EF4. This is one of the few things that I haven't tried, but I will give it a go now. Fingers crossed!

Hi there. How do you download the 'pdf of the same book from the internet archive'? From the Overdrive (libarary) website I only see 'download epub file' next to my loans.
Thank you. This problem is so frustrating!

I had this same problem. I followed these instructions on the Overdrive help page at https://help.overdrive.com/en-us/0926.html for "Content locked" error or book won't open on a Kobo ereader and was finally able to open my library book on my new computer without getting the "This book is protected by DRM message". You have to delete the problem book from your Adobe digital editions and your Kobo. Then deauthorize both your Kobo device and your computer and then reauthorize both. Reauthorize both your computer and your Kobo device and reimport the book from the library. After doing this, I was able to open the book on my Kobo.

Thank you, the link was helpful. In my case, I had to reboot my computer, which is a Mac. Then, I deauthorized the Kobo and reauthorized it again (for about the fifth time). I also decided to try downloading a second book.
After the reboot, I added both books to Adobe DRM, added them to the reader and both worked.

I suspect there are different problems with different types of Kobos. Mine is an old one - a Kobo Glo. It does not work with the newish 'OverDrive' system, used by many libraries. But with my library I can still download ePub versions. After much trying I found that the Kobo Glo also does not work with Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) version 4.5. To go back to an earlier version of ADE, you must first de-authosie the computer and the Kobo using ADE Version 4.5. Then Uninstall ADE v4.5, find an earlier version of ADE to install (ADE v3.0 is on the Adobe website - today at least). Then authorise both computer and Kobo under ADE Version 3.0. And if you are lucky, it might now allow you to read library epub books again! I did this all under Windows 11.

I have an older Kobo (the Kobo Glo) and I ran into the same issue as you. I followed all the troubleshooting steps online and ran into the same problem no matter what I did. I finally fixed it; here's how:
1) Open ADE 4.5
2) Remove your computer's authorization
3) Uninstall ADE 4.5
4) Go to https://www.adobe.com/support/digitaleditions/downloads.html, scroll 2/3 of the way down the page, and click on the download link for Adobe Digital Editions 2.0.1
5) Install ADE 2.0.1 after the file downloads
6) Remove the "problem" book from ADE
7) Download the book again from the public library's website
8) Double-click the book you downloaded in step 7
9) When prompted, authorize your computer for ADE
10) Click on "all items" in ADE
11) Plug in your Kobo to the computer
12) Drag and drop your book onto your Kobo device when it pops up in ADE
13) Safely eject your Kobo
14) Your book should work properly on your Kobo now.
