eReader not authorized to open this book

When I download a book from my public library I can open it in digital editions 4.5 but when I transfer it to my device (kobo) and try to open it on the kobo it says "This book is protected by DRM. Because you previously deauthorized your eReader, you need to re-import the book using Adobe Digital Editions." I tried erasing authorization and setting git up again but it still won't work. Erased and downloaded a new edition of ADE, that didn't work either. Tried different books and libraries but still have problem. Called kobo and after troubleshooting with them they say it as ADE problem. Please please please help! Thank you!

This thread is old but incase anyone is suffering from the same problem here in January 2023. I have finally figured out a hack to get my Kobo to work.

For the record, I have tried everything: De/Re Authorizing, deleting books, overdrive account vs adobe account, etc. I couldn't use ADE V3 as my Mac is running 64 bit and it's not supported. I thought I was hooped until I came across this in my hours of searching:

  1. Download another random book. One you HAVE NOT had on hold (this is important becau

Have spent a few hours over the past couple of days getting increasing frustrated as none of the above worked for me so i tried a combination.  And I 've just managed to download 4 books and was able to open them on my kobo so to try and help anyone else....

1st On my computer;

I uninstalled Adobe digitial editions from my computer

In the downloads file on my computer I deleted the Adobe files and any library books already there were moved out so my downloads file on my computer was empty (don't know if this did anything really but just meant I knew what was newly downloaded)

2nd Adobe

I used a link which I found on another thread on this site discussing the opening issue with kobo on which someone had posted a link to downloading versions 3.0 and 2. and I downloaded the 2 version which was then installed on my computer, I've just copied and pasted it below so hope it works for you if not this is the page on which I found the link OverDrive | If Adobe Digital Editions isn't wor...

Adobe Digital Editions downloads

I opened the Adobe on my computer and I clicked on the Help and selected Authorise computer - I selected Overdrive on the drop down and entered my Overdrive email and password (I was surprised it was accepted)  It then told me i was authorised.

Please note - I did not re-authorise my Kobo on the new Adobe it just worked.

Overdrive

I opened the Overdrive on my laptop and I used my Overdrive email address and password instead of my library card to log in.  I then did the standard procedure of clicking the Open in browser before searching and downloading four books which went as normal into my laptops download file.

Laptop

All as normal I went into my downloads folder and pulled each book in turn over onto the Adobe window then pulled them onto the Kobo library. Held my breath and coundn't believe it when I ejected my Kobo and instead of a blackened out book face it had images and no error message!!

I really hope this works for anyone else having this issue, best of luck!

ps I am unsure if instead of getting the older version of Adobe if it was all really fixed by just logging into Overdrive and authorising Adobe with the Overdrive log in email and password. Would be a lot less bother.  To just try that first.  I'm not messing with mine to check lol

SOLVED!

So this has happened on both my Kobo as well as my husband's.  I read on some other very long thread on this subject the following trick:

1. Transfer the library book to your Kobo and try it.

2. If you get the "oops! not authorized..." or whatever, go back to your library website and download a second book.  Doesn't matter what it is, just borrow something else that is available immediately.

3. Download the second book and transfer it to your device.

Just like magic, both books all of a sudden work no problem.  Very strange but there's clearly some kind of bug in the underlying Kobo software...

Yes, that is totally weird. The first book I borrowed from the library worked. The second gave me the "unauthorized to read" error message so I borrowed a third book and the second one ended up working too! Using ADE 4.5.8.

OMG! I have tried everything and THIS WORKS! How crazy.

Now that Mac updated its OS the oder versions of ADE won't even run, so that "fix" is no longer possible for me. Sigh.

This was THE solution that worked! So simple yet so frustrating to figure out! This should be the top answer for the issue.

Thank you, Melaniee!  I'm so grateful to you. I have spent so many frustrating hours trying most of the suggestions here and also trying things my local library suggested - none of which worked. I followed your instructions about downloading a second book and as you say "just like magic" both books were immediately downloaded, transferred and readable on my Kobo. Thank you so much! I was on the verge of giving up on my Kobo and would never have worked this out by myself. It's certainly a strange work-around..but it works!

Problem solved for me as follows:

  • Uninstalled Adobe Digital Editions 4.5
  • Installed Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 downloaded from here: Adobe Digital Editions downloads
  • Opened and de-authorized Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 as per here: https://helpx.adobe.com/digital-editions/kb/activation-errors-adobe-digital-editions.html
  • Closed and re-opened Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 and opened the downloaded ascm file which opened Adobe Digital Editions 3.0.
  • Re-authorized Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 when prompted.
  • Authorized my Kobo in Adobe Digital Editions 3.0
  • Dragged book into the Kobo from within Adobe Digital Editions 3.0
  • Ejected the Kobo from Finder (Mac)

Who would have thought an eBook could be so complicated.

Same issue here. Started happening when Libby was launched. After months of trying different approaches with mixed results -some fixes worked for a short time-, I ended up logging in to my OverDrive account using my library card and making sure that my profile was updated to reflect the fact that I am 13 years of age or older. That fixed it.

I've tried everything, but I can't download ADE Version 3.0.  Is it too old?  I saw somewhere that Overdrive won't work with older versions. Has anybody a link to something old but not too old?

Hi Lynn,
The link does work.

Adobe Digital Editions downloads

It LOOKS like an expired page but scroll almost to the bottom.

It works with overdrive.

I have been facing the same issue. The only procedure that worked for me was:

1. Deauthorize my computer and my kobo.

2. Uninstall Adobe Digitial Editions 4.5

3. Install Adobe Digital Editions 3.0

4. Open ADE and authorize my computer.

5. Close ADE and plug in kobo.

6. Open ADE as an admin (!!!) - this was the most important step which made it working out for me!

7. Now I was able to authorize my kobo.

8. Download the .ascm-file. Like others already stated, you must save it in your Downloads first. It didn't work for me when I opened it in ADE directly.

9. Open the .ascm-file in ADE and copy it on your kobo by drag & drop.

Hope this helps someone.
