Have you treid to copy the content of the DVD to your harddrive and launch from there? Also check your CS2 install. I get the impression it is not properly installed and the upgrade is scanning forverer to detect it when it can't....

When I try to look at the DVD via the explorer the reader treats the disk as though it is blank yet the second DVD in the set “Content and install Help” I can read.

I think the disk itself is bad…?

Agreed Ron it does sound like you have defective media if you are unable to copy the software to your hard drive.
