I just downloaded Adobe CS5 Design Premium and installed. Every application opens without problem except Dreamweaver which will not open at all. I tried installing again and that didn't work. I even tried removing all of my preference files, old Application Support files and even Library Application Support files. Uninstalled CS4 and CS5 and installed a fresh copy of CS5.
Dreamweaver CS5 will not open. It gets to just before the splash screen and stops. It's not hanging either, I can click the dock and quit the app without a force quit. It appears that the open sequence is missing something.
Mac OS X 10.6.3
Everyone is saying the update works but you never know, some may have problems finding it. I had this problem until minutes ago until I too did the update for CS5, go here:
http://www.adobe.com/support/dreamweaver/downloads_updaters.html#dwcs51104
If you are on Lion and are using CS5 (not 5.5) don't waste your time with permissions and preferences, this does it!

I have been testing Dreamweaver CS5 with network accounts. We have nfs shared accounts. Instead of trying to find the initial files required, I symlinked the entire users Library to a local location as a test. The application still doesn't open. So symlinking clearly isn't going to work this time.
Each time I talk to anyone at Adobe about their performance of software and network home accounts, disappointingly they never appear to be interested. Unfortunately, they appear to still be living in 1980-90 where everyone logs in locally. Adobe software is the only industry standard software that we use that has shown to suffer this badly on networks. Not only should an account be a local account, but Adobe still insist that all files must be local (including not using Firewire drives). With the size of files now, this is becoming very unrealistic, not to mention that local files aren't backed up or protected by being stored on raids; another reason why we run network home accounts.
We can only hope that they will provide an update that will get Dreamweaver working, both on network accounts and with Filevault.

It seems that most of us are using Mac OS X 10.6.3. Are there any P.C. users experiencing similar problems? or does Adobe just not give a %&@ about macs? or do they feel that a certain failure rate is acceptible and that fixing it would cut into to the profit margin?

Educated guess: Mac OS X provides "better" user-role separation than Windows although this appears to be improving on Windows 7. So I'd say a programmer can "get away" with performing certain operations under a windows environment which might be blocked under a Mac OS X (BSD) environment. I think the fact that I did just get DW5 to run by swapping to my "admin" user (I normally run myself as a limited user) might bear this out.
So, maybe it's trying (and failing) to escalate privilege in order to do something or calling something a user is not allowed to. I was about to suspect the activation but ..... I noticed that there was net activity out (way to go Little Snitch) but didn't screenshot it sadly. Will have to re-test and check...but Id suspect the Adobe apps share common components so if it needs to communicate out I'd think they all either can do so or cannot...

I had the same problem and tried to fix it for several days with all the answers posted here. What did it for me is that I removed the Dreamweaver App from the App's folder, using the red uninstaller App and then In the Uninstaller I checked "remove preferences". After that I installed it again and now it launches just like before. Hopefully it will help some of you facing this problem until Adobe comes up with a patch.

OSX 10.6.3 Macbook Pro - File Vault on. Does not work.
I have no plan to turn off my filevault. So the solution on http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/844/cpsid_84413.html does not help me at all.
There is no indication in the solution to say a fix is coming.
Would it be nice if the issue is mention in RED on the download page, so all of us don't need to waste our time. As a developer, I understand minor bugs conflict with other extension or plug-in, but if the app does not launch at all because of a standard OS feature. That is just not good enough.
How about in "What's New" - not compatible with OSX filevault. or indicate in the version comparision , File vault - tick for CS3, CS4, no tick for CS5... as suggested by the solution.

SOLUTION 101
Hi, I'm really not sure how far you got with this, or if indeed you managed to resolve it. After almost 10 solid hours of trouble shooting, I discovered like some other noted posts that this is a permissions issue. I did not have File Vault activated and after going around in circles (with fix permissions, reinstalling, restarting safe/normal modes) ended up in the user/library/application support/adobe folder.
This solution should work for any one who has had previous CS installations. When I navigated to the aforementioned section (User/Library/Application Support/Adobe Folder/Dreamweaver CS5) I found that the Dreamweaver CS5 folder was empty. I then threw it to the trash and duplicated the 'Dreamweaver CS4' folder and renamed it 'Dreamweaver CS5'. This subsequently worked like a charm, so my diagnosis is that this is a problem emanating directly with the installation and not current configurations such as File Vault. Coincidently, my Flash CS5 launched but had issues when inside the app - like writing script. I repeated the same solution and hey! it was like I had the adobe developers right in the room with me.
NOTE: You need to navigate to your username Library and not your hard drive Library.
Good Luck!

Try the changing premissions fix first as discribed. Then do the next fix, the copy and replace the folder.

Hi Yeahsurelalala, it's a real shame that this was not a direct fix for you. The only other solution I could possibly suggested is first going to your 'Disk Utility' in Applications/Utilities (or use your search bar/spotlight to find it) and use the fix permissions option. Once completed, return back to the duplications process in the Applications Support folder. Hopefully this works… but that's as far as I got, as I resolved the/my issue.

Joe9inety - your solution worked for me.
This was my situation.
a. Running OSX 10.6.4
b. Firevault not enabled
c. Was running DW CS3 (dreamweaver 9) but I installed CS5 trial from Adobe web site.
d. /User/Library/Application Support/Adobe Folder/Dreamweaver CS5 has files in it.
I tried everything, so did the following:
1. went into /User/Library/Application Support/Adobe Folder/
2. in this folder were the following folders
a. Dreamweaver 9
b. Dreamweaver CS5
3. I renamed the Dreamweaver CS5 folder to Dreamweaver CS5OLD
4. Renamed Dreamweaver 9 folder to Dreamweaver CS5
5. Restarted Dreamweaver CS5.
Now I am using the CS5 trial no problems. (yet)
Kindest Regards

Joe9inety....you are an angel! THANK YOU FOR POSTING. THIS WORKED FOR ME!!
Can't believe we pay so much for Adobe software, and to think it's now October 2010, and the issues are still there!!!
I renamed my CS4 folder to CS5 after trashing the current CS5 folder, it worked like a charm indeed.
I don't think I would ever want to support adobe again. If anyone knows of good alternatives, please post. It seems like the better Adobe try to be, the worse they actually become...sad.

I too, have tried all of the solutions and NOTHING works!! sigh. so frustrating. Called tech support....was on hold for 35 min before anyone picked up. Of course this was at 6:15 pm.....waited til 6:50...(mind you they close the north american support at 7 pm) Tech said he would call back within an hour. NADA! great customer service huh?! I don't get how come some of the fixes work for some people and others don't.
I'm running a Macbook pro 10.6.3 snow leopard.

The permissions solution also did NOT work for me. I suspect it's a FileVault incompatibility, as I have FileVault turned on, and have experienced this before with other Adobe products.
It is company policy that we keep FileVault enabled, so I am locked out of CS5. = (

I would say this is NOT a FileVault problem as I have it switched off. Still not working by the way!!
Can we please have a progress report on this from a member of the Adobe staff!?

Don't have FileVault, none of these solutions worked for me.
I finally fixed this today by installing the HTML5 extension pack (http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/html5pack.html)

Did you do the permission thing too? Just installed it too, but still not launching.

I tried every solution on here (including the permissions, repairing permissions on the entire drive, and copying the saved preferences from the dreamweaver cs4 folder to the dw cs5 folder) a few days before installing the html5 extension.

This seems to have worked for me (installing the HTML5 extension pack and verifying permissions - did both at about the same time, so no clue if it was one and not the other or the combo). At least I can open DW CS5 now. Sheesh, for the price, it shouldn't be this hard to get an app to run.

Had the same problem. Never used File Vault. Did the manual permission set and on third try, it worked. Echoes the pain I had when installing CS3.
As many have noted, bad QA.
