Dreamweaver CS5 will not open

Explorer ,
Apr 30, 2010 Apr 30, 2010

I just downloaded Adobe CS5 Design Premium and installed. Every application opens without problem except Dreamweaver which will not open at all. I tried installing again and that didn't work. I even tried removing all of my preference files, old Application Support files and even Library Application Support files. Uninstalled CS4 and CS5 and installed a fresh copy of CS5.

Dreamweaver CS5 will not open. It gets to just before the splash screen and stops. It's not hanging either, I can click the dock and quit the app without a force quit. It appears that the open sequence is missing something.

Everyone is saying the update works but you never know, some may have problems finding it. I had this problem until minutes ago until I too did the update for CS5, go here:

http://www.adobe.com/support/dreamweaver/downloads_updaters.html#dwcs51104

If you are on Lion and are using CS5 (not 5.5) don't waste your time with permissions and preferences, this does it!

If you have FileVault turned off and you're unable to launch Dreamweaver, instead of deleting all of your Dreamweaver CS5 user config files as mentioned in some of the earlier posts, try recreating just the DVADialogPrefs.xml file as described below.

1.  Quit Dreamweaver.

2.  In Mac Finder, browse to this file:

Mac HD/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Dreamweaver CS5/en_US/Configuration/DVADialogPrefs/DVADialogPrefs.xml

3.  Drag DVADialogPrefs.xml to the Mac desktop and rename it to DVADialogPrefsORIGINAL.xml.

4.  Restart Dreamweaver.

David, Thanks for your attempt to help.

"If you have FileVault turned off ..."

Dreamweaver works fine with FileVault turned off. I need it to work when I am using an account with FileVault turned *on*.

"In Mac Finder, browse to this file:

Mac HD/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Dreamweaver CS5/en_US/Configuration/DVADialogPrefs/DVADialogPrefs.xml
"
There is no folder named "DVADialogPrefs" or anything similar in the location specified above. In fact, there is no file or folder whose name includes the character string "DVAD" anywhere inside the folder
  Mac HD/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/

So, I am still stuck with a very expensive program that cannot be used unless I abandon a basic security measure, which I am of course not willing to do.

Hey All,

I ran into this same problem and wanted to post my solution which I haven't seen mentioned on here yet.

First of all, I want to give the background of my situation:

  • My OS: OS X  10.5.8 (I know, time to upgrade...)
  • FileVault Turned OFF (do not use filevault on this machine)
  • Dreamweaver CS5 had been working before.
  • Attempted all recommended solutions in this thread (*all of which seem to revolve around going to folders and changing permissions) as well as the official adobe page (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/844/cpsid_84413.html) to no avail.

My Solution:

  1. I created a new user account with admin rights (same as my actual account)
  2. Logged into new account and confirmed dreamweaver  CS5 launched with no issues
  3. went to /Users/<new account>/Library/Application Support/Adobe
  4. Modified the permissions of "Dreamweaver CS5" folder to include  read/write privileges for my regular user account
  5. Logged out of new account and back into regular account
  6. went into finder and replaced the "Dreamweaver CS5" folder from /Users/<regular account >/Library/Application Support/Adobe  WITH the "Dreamweaver CS5"  from /Users/<new account>/Library/Application Support/Adobe.
This fixed my problem, and DW CS5 is back to working on my standard user account, hope it helps some people.
Good Luck!

This problem might not be limited to FileVault.  But FileVault is definitely an issue.

I created a new user-account with administration privilege and FileVault OFF.  Dreamweaver CS5 launched properly with this account.  Deleted account.

I created a new user-account with administration privilege and FileVault ON.  Dreamweaver CS5 failed to launch with this account.  Deleted account.

Again I created a new user-account with administration privilege and FileVault OFF.  Dreamweaver CS5 launched properly with this account.

Unfortunately it is a requirement of the company I work for that FileVault be enabled on all workstations.

cayennecode, I have undertaken experiments like yours. Specifically, I created a new account on my Mac with FileVault not enabled, logged on to the new account, and found that Dreamweaver CS5 worked normally. Then, I enabled FileVault on the new account, logged on again to the new account, and found that Dreamweaver CS5 would not run. Then, I disabled FileVault on that account, logged on yet again, and found that Dreamweaver CS5 had reverted to normal operation.

GET WITH IT Adobe. At the very least post information stating whether you do or do not acknowledge this problem; and if you do, whether you are or are not working on a fix; and if you are, whether you estimate the time you'll need to develop and distribute a fix will be a day, a week, a month, or what.

Thanks for the info emt28q5.  Just a note, if your running time machine you can go to username/libarary/application support/ then delete the Dreamweaver CS5 folder.

Next, go into time machine find username/library/application support/dreamweaver cs5 and restore it.

With emt28q5's post I thought of time machine and came up with the above and it works.

Here’s how I fixed the problem:

  1. First quit Dreamweaver CS5 if you have in launched (or kinda launched)
  2. Open Finder and navigation to: Macintosh hd/users//library/application support/adobe/dreamweaver cs5/en-US/
  3. Here you will find the folder “configuration” … Rename this folder to ‘configurationOld’ and restart Dreamweaver

Yeah well, that's the same solution that I posted some time ago, but there's a better* solution:

1. quit Dreamweaver if still "running" (or something like that..)

2. go to <user>/library/application support/Dreamweaver cs5/en_US/Configuration/DVADialogPrefs/

3. delete or rename the file DVADialogPrefs.xml

4. restart Dreamweaver

5. presto!

This way, you don't need a backup of the Configuration folder so you don't lose your settings.

*just to be clear on this: the only acceptable solution is a fix by Adobe!

Mate I created a profile here, in order to log in and thank you for this advice.

I bought CS5 today at a shop.

I did a whole heap of permission changes, and thankfully lost *only* 40 minutes, before stumbling onto this thread.

Your fix worked a treat.

Many many thanks.

I submitted a bug report and surprisingly got an answer about 5 hours later! I quote:

Yes this is something which we are working on to fix in an update.

No ETA, but at least they're working on it.

That's why you should always submit a bug report if you find what you think is a genuine bug. The forums are not regularly monitored by Adobe employees, but the bug report form goes directly to the people who matter.

From what I have heard privately, the fix should be available fairly soon. Adobe has been closed for the past week (extended July 4 holiday), but I'm sure the engineers will be back checking the fix on Monday.

The patch fixes it!

If you open Photoshop or any other CS5 application then choose "Updates", it'll open Adobe Application Manager (or whatever it's called) and update Dreamweaver.

Make sure you back up your site definitions before applying the 11.0.2 update. It seems to wipe out FTP login details.

Hmmm again, forum took my email, stripped the content to place an empty forum post... edited with my reply...

It left mine in-place. (EDIT: Sorry, no it didn't : usernames and passwords were stripped), exporting your site definitions before running the update is very good advice!

For those who can't remember how (the UI isn't entirely intuitive for this) repeating the steps I took:
* Site > Manage sites...
* Use Shift-click/Cmd-CLick to select sites from the list for export
* CLick Export...
(In the Export Site dialogue, created a new folder on the desktop)
* Click Save
Although the UI infers it will only save one site, it actually saves each of those you had selected into the folder.

Not here.  All information intact .. all FTP connection that I tried work.  I am running XP SP3 so it could be an OS issue.

although it is always good advice.  I export new site definitions to an external (to DW) folder the minute I create them.

True, but unless submitting bugs within a pre-release environment, don't expect to receive any reply or progress monitoring of a bug-form submission. Hence a reason this forum and this thread are useful - If you hadn't obtained and published that response, we'd still be wondering if Adobe even recognised the problem.

Of course, the forum is useful for conveying this sort of information. Unfortunately, a lot of people are under the mistaken impression that posting here is all they need to do. The only way to bring a bug to the attention of the engineering team is to submit the details through the official form at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform.

Another way of getting the message through is by posting comments on the Adobe Knowledge Base pages (they have kb2 in the URL). Comments on those pages are normally handled directly by Adobe Customer Support.

I have just installed the update, and this has seemingly resolved the issue with logging in as a network user. At this point the program launches, whereas previously it didn't.

Glidewell - since the update I and other team members have used the software without too many issues, so it does seem that this has been resolved.

Would be good if the same sort of fix could be applied to Acrobat!
