AcrobatUpd11009.msp patch cannot be installed

Hello all,

Another month, another Adobe patching headache! So I have read the Enterprise Administration guide many times, and I have been deploying and patching Adobe Flash,Reader and Acrobat for years now. Usually it goes smoothly, but eventually I always run into an issue. This time my problem is this:

  • Last month, I created a new Acrobat XI AIP from the bas 11.0 media. I patched this AIP to 11.0.07 (quarterly)
  • I then installed Acrobat on many clients using the command line option 'PATCH=AcrobatSecUpd11008.msp' to "chain" the OOC patch into my install, without actually applying the OOC to my AIP.
  • Today, when I try to apply the AcrobatUpd11009.msp to these same clients, I am getting the error in the log file:  "PATCH SEQUENCER: minor upgrade patch \\server\share\AcrobatUpd11009.msp is not applicable."
    • And error in GUI: "The upgrade cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade".

Can someone out there tell me what I did wrong here? I believe I can uninstall 11.0.08 then run a full install of 11.0.09 from a new AIP, but that seems unnecessary.

Thanks in advance!

After much more research and testing, I have decided to abandon our AIP based method of deploying Reader and Acrobat. I will now use the 'bootstrapper' method, which uses setup.exe and setup.ini, and supports applying msp patches to any version (including OOC).

The bootstrapper method also supports some other nice features including relative paths to Transforms and Patch files (ideal for SCCM deployments).

Hi Fitgerac,

Sorry you have had issues. On the bright side, the number of updates/patches in 10/11 have been reduced by 60%+ over 9.x and updates are cumulative and therefore easier. However, in this case that's your problem: returning to that scintillating read we call the Admin Guide we see "In AIP workflows, you cannot apply quarterly updates over . . . a security patch: e.g. 10.1 over 10.0.1|2|3." So 11.0.09 cannot be installed over 11.0.08.

A12 installs will see additional streamlining.

Thanks Ben, but I'm pretty sure the Admin Guide is referring to applying patches to the AIP. In my case I am unable to apply the patch to client computers that were installed from the AIP.

If you deploy via AIP, then updates must use AIP and conform to the supported patch order.

Thanks Ben, but can you clarify that statement a bit?

After installing from an 11.0.07 AIP with 11.0.08 chained to the install, how am I then supposed to patch the client workstation to 11.0.09? What does "updates must use AIP" mean?

Sorry, I must be missing something here...

Thanks for your help!

Good decision. Most admins use that deployment method as the AIP method is subject to more constraints and is harder to troubleshoot.

I believe my original AIP assertions are correct, but some of the Admin Guide text seems fuzzy and I'm trying to get confirmation on some items. Even though you've switched to bootstrapper, I'll report back.

Still no answer on this?    We have the same problem on all our computers.  Seem that after installing 11.08 update, something isn't updated because the 11.09 patch thinks it is still 11.07.   (yes, going to help/about shows version 11.08)

Admin Guide (“http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/AdminGuide/aip.html)  says:

  • Do not create the AIP directly on the root drive (e.g. C:). Use TARGETDIR on the command line or the AIP user interface to specify a different install location.
  • If you previously deployed using an AIP, then you must apply the successive patches using an AIP.
  • Know when you can reuse AIPs and when you have to create a new one. For example, Acrobat 10.x quarterlies are cumulative and cannot be installed on top of each other.
  • 11.x products do not require uninstalling existing products that were installed via an AIP. Update the product as described at http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/AdminGuide/gpo.html

The correct steps for AIP deployment are:

  1. Always first create AIP for 11.0.0 and preserve it.
  2. Apply 11.0.09 Q patch over AIP created above in (1).
  3. Uninstall 11.0.08 AIP deployed earlier or follow 9   Group Policy-Active Directory — Enterprise Administration Guide
  4. Reinstall 11.0.09 AIP created at step (2).
  5. Repeat steps (2-4) when new patch is released (make sure to follow correct patch application Order).

We have the same issue. We have AIP installs and now we can't run .msp. We get the same error. I need to install 11.0.12. The only thing I can do is uninstall and create an AIP with the newest version and reinstall it, every time a new update comes out. I have had this issue since 11.0.9. Did you find a solution?

Sorry, I didn't get notified that people were stil responding in this thread.

Yes, we did find a solution, which was to abandon the AIP method altogether and start using the "bootstrapper" method from the Admin Guide. See my comment above for more details.
