How do I Remove a License from my Team Plan?

New Here ,
Feb 09, 2021 Feb 09, 2021

I have a Teams Plan which includes 3 Adobe Acrobat licenses for my work team, however we now only require 2 licenses.  I have been going round in circles trying to see if I can amend my plan with no luck whatsoever.  None of the help pages provide any correct or useful information and there is no where to have a live chat that I can see either as it just links back to the same 'help' page.

Please can someone advise how I can actually amend my plan? Or speak to someone at Adobe that can do this for me? Either this or I will cancel the plan altogether and set up a new one, but I cant even see a way to cancel the plan either! Please can someone help?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

A license is committed for one year or prorated to the anniversary. If you have purchased your Teams membership directly from Adobe.com, you can remove licenses from the Admin Console during the renewal period

To remove licenses outside of the renewal period, navigate to Adobe Admin Console > Support to contact us.

Hope this helps.

Even during the renewal period it's not clear where you can edit it. The buttons are not showing and even customer service is not sure why. If anyone is interested in Adobe products, reconsider. It's very easy to purchase, very hard to get away from.

Note: The customer service in Holland was very helpful.

I've done this multiple times and the buttons were there. Unfortunately, I'm not at renewal currently, or I would show it.

I have tried to contact "Support" as you call it there is only the number and if you call they state you have to talk tot he VIP team which they make you wait forever on hold. VIP I am not sure Adobe knows the meaning of the word.

Planning to Cancel or Remove Licenses from Your Adobe Teams Subscription? (Manage your team licenses | Adobe Help Center)

Before making changes to your Adobe Teams Subscription, it’s important to understand the license structure and timing rules to avoid unnecessary fees or service interruptions.

Adobe Teams subscriptions can be purchased in two ways:

1. Direct Licenses (Purchased from Adobe.com) (Managed through the Adobe Admin Console):

If your organization buys licenses directly from Adobe, you manage everything inside the Admin Console.

a. Renewal Window (30 Days Before Renewal Date)

What you can do:

  • Adobe sends an email with details on products, quantities, and pricing.
  • You can add or remove licenses during this window.
  • Adjust quantities before the renewal date

  • Changes take effect on the renewal date
  • Review renewal pricing and product lineup

Where to check your renewal details:

  • Sign in to the Adobe Admin Console
  • Go to Account → Renewal.
  • Select View details to review or update your plan.

Why this matters:
Changes made here take effect on the renewal date, preventing early termination fees.

b. Managing Licenses Outside the Renewal Window

  • You must contact Adobe Support to request a license reduction

  • An Early Termination Fee (ETF) may apply, as defined in the Adobe Subscription Terms

  • The remaining contract duration and seat usage can affect whether fees apply

Important note:
If you remove a license assigned to an active user, ensure they are reassigned or removed first to prevent access loss.

2. Indirect Licenses (Purchased Through a Reseller) Managed through your reseller contract.

If your subscription was purchased via an Adobe Reseller:

  • All license changes must be made through the reseller, not Adobe Support

  • Terms and pricing follow your reseller agreement

Where to verify your contract type:

  • Go to Admin Console → Account → Plans
  • If you see “Reseller details or VIP number”, it means your plan is indirect (purchased through a reseller)
  • If you do not see this message and instead see direct billing or Adobe contact details, your plan is direct (purchased directly from Adobe)

Here is a quick comparison table for easy understanding

Action Direct Plan Indirect Plan
Add licenses (any time) ✔ Yes ✔ Yes (via reseller)
Remove licenses (during renewal window) ✔ Yes ✔ Yes (via reseller)
Remove licenses (outside renewal window) Via Adobe Support (ETF may apply) ✔ Only via reseller (terms apply)
Modify contract terms ✘ No ✔ Through reseller
Admin Console self-service ✔ Full ✔ Partial

One clarification: On the Account overview page, under Renewal, click the blue 'Update plan' button to remove licenses. The 'View details' tab does not let you change license quantity.

Hi @MD_Charlton,

Thank you for reaching out. To update your renewal plan, please follow these steps:

Update Your Renewal Plan:

  • In the Admin Console, navigate to the Account tab and click Update Plan under Renewal.
Modify the products and the number of licenses, then click Continue.
    Adjust License Count (If Decreasing):
  • Select the appropriate options and click Continue.
If an offer appears, click Accept to apply it, then proceed by clicking Continue.

Note: You cannot cancel the entire account using this workflow. If you set the renewal quantity for all products to zero, you will be prompted to contact Adobe Customer Care.

Update Your Payment Method:

  • Click Edit to modify your payment details.
Important: If you have multiple subscriptions linked to the same credit card, updating the payment method for one subscription will apply the changes to all linked subscriptions.

Review and Save Changes:

  • After reviewing your modifications, click Save Changes.
For more details, refer to the official Adobe documentation:

Direct Business Renewals Guide.

If you encounter any issues while updating your plan, please share a screenshot of the error message via personal message so we can assist you further. Instructions on how to send a personal message can be found here:

Hi Anshul – I just thought it worth noting that your information is not entirely correct—I just spent 40 minutes on customer support and have been informed there is, in fact, no grace period!!!

Rather than being able to cancel around 6 plans for subscriptions we were not using, I've been offered a discount instead, which doesn't cover what should have been able to be cancelled. I appreciate I should have done this within the renewal window – but yeah, the grace period doesn't exist, and the language on the page you linked here)  This highlights, "You have 30 days from the renewal date to make any adjustments before your plans renew." despite indicating you have 30 days from the renewal date, it is apparently meant to read as 30 days before the renewal date.

They want you to contact customer service so they can push you make you a customer retention offer.  We were in a similar situation and out our renewal period and got two offers after trying to cancel 2 of the 5 memeberships we had.   In the end we got a 8 months at 34% of listed price.

I have found removing licenses to be ridiculous with Adobe. Our company has 60 licenses and we pay monthly but I had to contact their licensing department specifically. I spent over a 1/2 hour repeatably telling them I wanted to remove 4 licenses and then lost the chat. I then received an email saying they did not process the cancellation since the chat was dropped.  I responded to that again noting I just wanted the 4-licenses cancelled and I have still not heard back. I am not sure what is wrong with Adobe other than being greedy, let me cancel the license it can stay active to the end of the current billing period I really don’t care, just make the process easy.  It really is not difficult, they let you buy a new license in 30 seconds?

That issue was not discussed with the person from Adobe, I ask how to remove licenses they said they would need to transfer me and then next person said yes they could help with that. I then had to confirm multiple time that Yes I wanted to remove 4 license and not once was it brough up I might need to be in a renewal period. That aside the person was reviewing our account and I am sure could see these 4 license had been unassigned for months.  As noted earlier we are on a monthly account, so the renewal is coming up in 10 days. Do I need to call at midnight on the 31st????

Why do I need to be in renewal period to mark license as not renewable for the next year?

This is something I don't understand.

The licenses of whatever other application on the market I can just mark as non-renewable that is it, I don't need to wait and track a renewal monthly period - I have tons of other tasks to deal with, including tens of other applications that I deal with. If every ohter vendor would have similar bad system in place it would be a total nightmare.

Please add this option for god's sake to mark yearly license non-renewable at any time.

This is defnitely not "solved" that is misleading to tag this post as if this was a legit answer.  I was notified I was inside the renewal window, but the teams portal has no method to reduce any licenses.  You can delete users or shuffle who is assigned to licenses, but you can't select anywhere to remove this.  The FAQ even shows screenshots of portal admin screens which don't exist!   And if you have a license in a "personal account" you also cannot cancel. So you end up calling a person at 1-800-685-3570 and pressing 3 and waiting hold while they review your account.  Just try to be clear about what you need (downsizing the # of licenses) so you can do that before it auto-renews at a higher price than last year.

You are simply wrong with this. The admin console does allow for reducing the number of licences, if needed, during the renewal period. I've done this before multiple times, when a person left the company. I've also added licences when required. All works transparently through the admin console. As a side note: all administrators get an e-mail, when the renewal period starts.

When you have a personal account, you can't manage that account via the admin console. That sounds logical to me, as it is a personal account. For that, you must go to https://account.adobe.com/plans. Make sure that you are signed in to the personal Adobe ID and not the business ID (you can have both on the same e-mail, but you can't be signed in on both at the same time).  Click “Manage plan” for the plan you want to cancel and cancel it.

"during the renewal period" is intentional. There is no need to wait for a renewal period when you want to reduce the number of licenses before then. Surely Adobe can figure out how to make this easier for Admins. Right now it has the feel of easy to buy, hard to cancel.

it makes no sense to terminate early because you still have to pay for all annual licenses.

You're not terminating early. You're marking for only the desired number of licenses to be renewed in the future. All paid for licenses can be used until that date.
