Problems deploying Adobe Reader DC GPO

Guest

Hi,

I'm trying to deploy Adobe Reader DC thru GPO. I've downloaded the package, take the msi, include the updates and customizing the installation with Adobe Customization Wizzard DC. I put it on a GPO and it installs right the first time. If I remove Acrobat reader DC and install again, it will not be installed again on the next restart.

If I try to install old version to know if it does the installation right uninstalling previous versions, it uninstalls old version but not install new one.

Can you help me? It's something strange, we have another GPOs for another software and we have not this kind of prroblems.

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Hi Raul,

Your question is a little unclear and doesn't provide enough information. Why are you uninstalling in the first place and then reinstalling an old version? What does your cmd line look like?

Here are a few points that might help:

  • Installs should be done on a clean machine. If you've been installing and removing several versions on the machine, try uninstalling everything and run the AcroCleaner tool from LABs.
  • The Wizard only removes older versions of the product. There are some caveats which are described here: Installation options — Acrobat Customization Wizard DC for Windows
  • emphasized from above link: removing Reader requires using setup.exe.
  • A new version of the Wizard was released Oct 13. Use that.

hth,

Ben

Hi Ben,

I'm doing these tests to see if I remove the program manually, it installs again on the next restart.

1 - I checked the Acrocleaner and restart the computer and it did not work

2 - Where I should place the setup.exe? The setup of old versión or new on?

Thanks,

Hi Raul,

Please follow these steps:

1) Please enable MSI logging first of all as described on this page. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/223300

2) You can enable verbose logging as described on https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc775423(v=ws.10).aspx, On admin command prompt, do: gpupdate /force and then it will ensure that Policy is enforced if it asks for restart. If it doesn't ask for restart, please share logs from  "%windir%\debug\usermode\UserEnv.log" location.

If Reader DC is not installed after restart, please share the latest "MSI*.log" logs from "cd %temp%" location.

Regards,

Sourab Sharma

When you deploy an app through GPO, it leaves a "marker" in the registry to show that it doesn't need to re-install it.  If you delete this marker from the registry and then gpupdate and reboot, it should deploy again:

See the following article for more details:  ReInstall Applications Deployed Through Group Policy Software Installation - DeployHappiness

anectdotally, I've had to go one step further and go to the History section of that Group Policy branch, and in there you will find multiple entries that correspond to Reader or any other app you've deployed and I've had to delete those entries too to get an application to re-deploy.

Hello,

I believe I need some help here too.

I’ve created the GPO (Computer Configuration > Policies > Software Settings > Software Installation) and restarted the machine.

This is what I get at the server side,

Beginning a Windows Installer transaction: \\*.*.local\deploy$\AdobeReaderDC\AcroRead.msi. Client Process Id: 7324.

And a second later,

Ending a Windows Installer transaction: \\*.*.local\deploy$\AdobeReaderDC\AcroRead.msi. Client Process Id: 7324.

I don’t think it’s about folder/share permissions.

The Setup.ini generated file by Customization Wizard is,

[Startup]

RequireOS=Windows 7

RequireMSI=3.0

RequireIE=6.0.2600.0

CmdLine=/sall /rs

[Product]

msi=AcroRead.msi

CmdLine=TRANSFORMS="AcroRead.mst"

[Windows 7]

PlatformID=2

MajorVersion=6

MinorVersion=1

[MSI Updater]

Path=http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/8.x/8.0/misc/WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe

Any help?

Thank you.
