Hi,
I am using FrameMaker version 16.04 and am wondering how to change text in a book's master page. Specifically it's ccopyright information that needs to be updated. When I access the master page and click the entry I'm not able to change anything. Can someone please help me with this?
Thank you.
Elizabeth

Although less likely the situation, the © text on the MP could be a Text Inset coming in from somewhere. It would have the double-secret PgfLocked Yes tag set, and would also behave as a single unmodifiable object.

And if replaced by a Variable, beware of the paragraph format still having that Lock assigned.

    Hi Elizabeth,

What do you mean when you say that you cannot change anything? Do you mean the text?

What happens, when you double-click on the text on the master page?

If it is a variable, the variable pod should open.

If it is a text inset, you should also get a message.

    Best regards

    Hi,
When I click the entry on the master page, the text goes black and I can't do anything. I don't get any messages.

Do you mean the text highlights (black background, white text)? That would indicate that it is a variable.

No, the entire amount of text is black. There is no white area at all.

That type of information could, and should, be entered as a variable. Check the Variable panel (View > Panels>...) and see if there is a user variable for the copyright info. Click on it and click the edit (pencil) icon and another panel will open up. (You don't have to be on the master pages to update a user variable.)

There probably needs to be a selection failure FAQ somewhere.

When desiring to click inside what appears to be a text string, and the result is the selection of an entire block of text, the top suspects are:
    • FM document Variable

    • FM document Cross-Reference

    • Text Inset from external file

    • Graphical object

Graphics object may just look like text (PNG, JPG, TIF), or might contain actual text (EPS, SVG, PDF) that renders as text to the output deliverable (PDF, HTML).

When apparent text can't be selected at all, the top suspects are:

    • Master or Reference Page object, as accessed on Body page

    • Generated via Auto-Number, as accessed anywhere

These lists are likely not comprehensive. They exclude, for example, custom fonts that contain entire character strings at single code points (somewhat common in enterprise logotypes). The ligature ffl (U+FB04) is an example that doesn't even require a custom font.
