couldn't open file because it uses unavailable fonts

I am using framemaker 7.1 and windows 7. I am very familiar with this error. Every time I have gotten it save as with the same file name has always taken care of the problem. I just reloaded framemaker and now the save as does not work. Any suggestions?

Do you have the "Remember Missing Font Names" option enabled in your Preferences?

What exactly do you mean by "the save as does not work"? Are you getting an error message? Is the file not being created? Can you create a MIF version?

FM7.1 is not supported under Win7. It will run in compatibility mode, though.

yes it is enabled. By the save does not work I mean even when I save it when

I reopen the file I get the same message. I do not know what a MIF version

is. I understand that it is not supported in win 7, however it was working

fine until I reloaded. Thanks again for any help

You'll keep getting the missing fonts message until you rectify the situation.

You need to any of the following:

1. Install the missing fonts (they are displayed in the Console window).

2. Substitute another font for the missing one(s) via the designers.

3. If the automatic substitution that FM does is acceptable, then you must do the following:

    a) Open the file(s).

    b) Turn OFF the "Remember Missing Font Names" preference

    c) Save and close the file(s)

    d) Turn ON  the "Remember Missing Font Names" preference

    e) Re-open the file(s)

This will make the substitutions permanent.

FYI, a MIF (Maker Interchange Format) file is a text file representation of the document.

I will try what you said - but now I am having another problem that I have

NEVER had. Just a FYI - these are the SAME files I have been using, saving

and resaving for MANY TIMES on xp and windows 7 that I have just staring

getting the messages on EVERY file. This message is "the file is saved to a

temporary file, but FrameMaker can't rename it to have the correct name. The

newer version has an odd suffix". WHAT IS GOING ON??? The only thing

different is the fact that I reloaded FrameMaker and I also added a malware

(Malwarebytes) program. I have hundreds of files that I CANNOT RENAME!!!!!!

I'm at a complete loss and could use ANY assistance.

It sounds like you may have a permissions issue on your Win7 machine (possibly because of the more rigorous UAC). Try running with admin priviliges.

Something is interfering with FM's ability to write the files out. You may overtly agressive settings in anti-virus software or you may be working to a networked device or you may have some funky (group) policy settings. Also check to see that you actually are running FM with admin priviliges. [You can try to start FM manually using the "Run as administrator" context menu option.]

Also, make certain that when you are running FM, you're in compatibiliy mode.

I was thinking after I left you the last message - there is ABSOLUTELY

NOTHING different from the time I was not getting the message until I just

started getting the message. I was working on my files yesterday morning and

turned off my computer. I turned it on yesterday afternoon and then started

working on the files and then is when I got the message. Right now I have 2

computers - 1 with windows 7 and 1 with windows XP. I use the XP computer

(unfortunately they are not networked) any time I have a problem with

FrameMaker on the windows 7 computer. However the XP computer is used for

graphics, so I have LOTS of fonts on it. As you know FrameMaker 7 lists all

of the fonts, so the screen only shows so many fonts. Therefore if I have to

change fonts on the XP computer, I cannot, because I use fonts that are at

the end of the alphabet. I used PageMaker previously and it handled fonts

MUCH better. However PageMaker was limited to the amount of pages it could

handle, (believe me I found this out the hard way by MANY telephone

conversations with Adobe teck support), so I was forced to go to FrameMaker.

XP compatibility mode - I downloaded the files but have not installed it

yet. I really do not know anything about this program, so I was a cautious

on installing it. I looks like this is something that I can run JUST for

FrameMaker and run all of my other programs in windows 7. Is that true? The

one thing I read was "It isn't optimized for graphic-intensive program". I

have TONS of graphics and videos in my files. The graphic files are imbedded

into my files (I DO NOT want to link them) and my video files are linked. My

XP computer handles the files fine. Would this be a problem with the XP

compatibility mode?

For XP compatibility I got the following message:

Choose the download you want

File Name

WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe

469.8 MB

WindowsXPMode_N_en-us.exe

449.0 MB

For Windows Virtual PC I got the following message:

Choose the download you want

File Name

Windows6.1-KB958559-x86-RefreshPkg.msu

15.3 MB

Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu

16.3 MB

I downloaded both for each - have not installed anything yet. Unfortunately

on the Microsoft site it does not say anything other that what I copied and

pasted into this e-mail.

I do not know to start FM manually using the "Run as administrator" context

menu option.

I followed the instructions EXACTLY for downloading and installing the XP

compatibiliy mode from

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-

in-windows-7

However when I select as the instructions says "click the Start button

Picture of the Start button, click Windows Virtual PC, click Windows XP Mode

Applications, and then click the program you want to open" - FrameMaker is

not available. I DID install FrameMaker exactly as directed in the

installation instructions. What am I missing?

I ran the hardware assisted virtualization tool and everything went well.

When I tried to open the Windows XP mode I got that XP is not available on

this version of windows. When I selected the link to "How do I upgrade..." I

get to this link - that does not do me any good. HELP!!!!!!!

All you need to do is to right-click on the FrameMaker.exe, select Properties and get the following:

Win7_compatibility_mode.png

Select the Compatibility tab and from that, select the Windows XP mode. There was no mention of downloading and installing the virtual XP mode (which only works in the Pro and Ultimate versions).

You say :

Therefore if I have to change fonts on the XP computer, I cannot, because I use fonts that are at the end of the alphabet.

You're doing something terribly wrong if you are picking fonts from the FM Format > Font menu. You should be using the designers, where the fonts are available in a manageable pick-list. FYI, the list scrolls to the first character you type when navigating an extremely long one. FM should not be used like PageMaker.

You may get missing font messages if the default system printer is different. For working with FM, you should always be using the AdobePDF printer instance. To ensure that this is always your default with FM, it is highly recommended to use the SetPrint utility available from:

http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm

I finally was able to install and run in the virtual xp mode. However I still cannot do what I want to do. I followed the istructions from http://www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-xp-mode-windows-7-win7,10213.html for setting it up. My problem is - I have 2 hard drives - all my data MUST be mapped to the F drive. When I opened up the XP machine - it does not recognize the 2nd drive - it only shows the primary C drive. Is there any way to get around this?
