I inherited a lengthy Service Manual consisting of 6 separate files (chapters) that are intended to be consolidated into a book when complete. Page numbering, Figure numbering and Table numbering is supposed to be sequential, but I find when I delete a figure in one chapter, the next figure number in the subsequent chapter is out of order. I'm new to FrameMaker 10 and can't seem to correct this.
Please help!

but I find when I delete a figure in one chapter, the next figure number in the subsequent chapter is out of order.
Are the figure numbers auto-numbered or hand-typed?
ParagraphDesigner > Numbering
[ F:Figure\ <n+> ]
or similar. The <n+> is key.
Are any overridden with <n=>?
Are the Book numbering properties
Format > Document > Numbering
[ Paragraphs ]
<*> Continue Numbering from Previous Paragraph in Book
The chapter file need to match this, but setting in the book menu can do that.
Are the numbered para fmt names identical in all files?

Good resource for beginning FM users - http://wiki.scriptorium.com/ (do a Google site search on it - numbering site:wiki.scriptorium.com for hits (it's free); the paid version of their FM8 manual is also great as a reference. The UI has changed, but the functionality stays the same.

Margie, after you delete the figure in a chapter have you been updating the book? Assuming that the numbering has been set up correctly, it's necessary to update the book in order for FM to recalculate the figure numbers, page numbers, etc etc. across all the chapters.
With the book file as "active" (meaning that you've clicked on the book window so that window has the focus), put your cursor on the book name at the top then do Edit > Update book.
I would do a Save of all the files in the book first, before updating.
Edit: and of course after you update, check the numbers, then do another Save All of the book so that the updated numbers are saved.

Thanks for the response. The files haven't been built into a book. That's a whole other nproblem! Several fonts are missing and that won't allow me to build the book. Any ideas?

Ah, not in a book yet, now I get the "intended to be consolidated into a book", I overlooked that critical tidbit. OK, well, then, you're between a rock and a hard place, unfortunately.
If the chapters aren't in a book, and/or if the numbering hasn't been set up correctly in the chapters, then FM can't update across multiple chapters, that's the bottom line.
The biggest question for you is to determine how the figure numbering has been applied in the files. As Error7103 indicated above, look at the numbering properties for each of the figure paragraphs and each of the table title paragraphs. Write down the autonumber settings for each specific paragraph, one after the other, so you'll start to get a sense of how the numbering properties change through the chapter. Be sure to keep the list of figures separate from the list of tables. Post some of this list of autonumber properties so that we can tell how they were done.
As far as fonts missing and that stops creating a new book, this could be several issues. Does the dialog tell you what fonts are missing?

I've checked the paragraph tags in each chapter, they appear identical:
C:\tTable\<><><><n+>\t
What happened is, the preceding chapter became shorter and I noticed the next chapter page numbers started incorrectly. I went to Format, Numbering, and changed the starting number to the correct one. That's when the Table and figure numbers started renumbering from 1.
I'm thinking it might be better to compile as a book, but I'm getting the "unvailable fonts" message. I've checked every font and they seem to be OK, but there's 150 pages and a zillion tags. Is there any way to make a global deletion ofo fonts? I can see the problem fonts screened back iin the font list.

Regarding the missing fonts issue:
To get an overview of fonts in your document or book, you can create list of fonts in use.
In the book window, click Add > List of > References. (For a single document, this would be Special > List of > References.)
In the dialog, add "Fonts" to the list of references, and click "Set".
If you see an unexpected font in the generated list, Ctrl-Alt-click the list entry to jump right to the location in the document.
Next, if you are sure that none of the required fonts are actually missing, do the following:
1. Go to File > Preferences, and deselect the "Remember missing font names" option. Click "Set".
2. Save and close all documents.
3. Quit and restart FM.
4. Reopen all files, and save them again.
5. Go to File > Preferences, and deselect the "Remember missing font names" option. Click "Set".
You shouldn't get any further "Missing Fonts" messages for these documents.
