Question

Fresco freezing when tool switching - iPad

I've encountered some serious issues with Fresco freezing.

It normally happens when I am tool switching. Most of the time it's from a vector brush and trying to tap on Transform, Eraser, or the Type Tool. This error happens literally every time I want to tool switch. Fresco is basically unusable to me right now, which sucks as I'm a professional and this is my workflow. The only way around it is to swip up on my ipad, exit the program, and come back. Only then can I tool switch, and it's MOST of the time. Sometimes I have to close the program and reopen it in order to tool switch.

Example. I'll be using a vector round brush to draw, then I'll want to transform something, so I'll try to tap on the transform tool and can't. Everything on the screen is frozen, except:

  • my ability to keep using that selected round brush tool
  • I can long press to eyedrop change color
  • I can move the cancvas

I can't tap on other tools, I can't select layers. I have to exit the program and then come back to reset it. I thought maybe it was a memory lag and tried waiting to see if Fresco could "catch up" and that didn't work either.

I can't figure out a cause. This happens on all pf my canvases/projects. It happens on a basic canvas with 1 layer and it happens on a canvas with many many layers and multiple types of brushes and elements. I have restarted my iPad. I have checked for Apple and Adobe updates. I have closed all programs except fresco. I have signed out and signed back in. There is plenty of memory and storage on the device available.

I have no fix for this, and I'm fed up. This is my livelihood and it's been happening for weeks. Anyone else have the same issue or a fix?

Hello @Jo5CD7,

We understand that encountering technical issues can be frustrating. I hope the suggestions shared above helped resolve the problem. If not, we may need to troubleshoot this in a live session. Please head here (https://adobe.ly/3IUwaJc) and select the chat button in the lower-right corner of the page. We can help troubleshoot faster that way.

Do we think their will ever be a fix for this. I have been living with this headache for months, at least probably since last summer. A litte less than a year maybe, constant freezing, always have to restart my iPad to get the program to work again. It's beyond frustrating & counterproductive. I will not switch to Procreate because of its raster limitations. we do all vector stuff so I have to live with this all the time. Come on Adobe let's get it together. It has been a few weeks this is months. People rely on these programs to make a living. Thank you!

If Fresco is still not working - I've had the same issue with no way to fix it.
Try Amadine or Affinity Designer. Both have ipad versions and have vector brushes

Fresco v5.2 is now available in the App Store and should have the fix for this issue.

Thank you for your patience, and apologies again to those affected by this bug.

Have exactly the same problem with vector brush, it freezes and I have to tap undo in order to unfreeze

It was initially difficult for us to reproduce this issue in-house, but when we finally did, we were able to narrow down the cause. We have a fix in the works, and we are hoping to include it in our next release (v5.2).

Apologies to all those that were affected by this bug. The trigger is somewhat random but it is more likely to happen when drawing a moderately complex vector stroke. The root cause was a bug in a third-party library that was causing a deadlock in some of our vector post-processing.

There is a workaround to try until the next release fixes the issue. You can two-finger tap on the canvas to undo, then three-finger tap to redo. That will re-enable the UI panels again. However, this workaround only works until the next time you draw a vector stroke, at which point you will need to do the workaround again.

Hope that helps,

Finally, some answers!!! Glad it's being worked on and looking forward to a fix. As someone who draws exclusively in vectors for client work and for live event performance art, this has been *maddening* to manage. Can't wait for the next release!

When this happens for me I notice my stroke won't appear in the layer preview on the right-hand side... it's blank until I swipe up for the iPad toolbar and then back to Fresco. It's like it doesn't recognize the drawing and freezes up.

Thanks for bringing this to their attention Emily. I have been having this exact same problem for months and thought the app was going crazy. I was just about to buy a new iPad because it's such a problem for working but glad to know it's a problem on Adobe's side. Thank you adobe for finally looking into it. What is the estimated release date of your of your (v5.2) update?

Yes Emily I also can't see my drawing in the small right side box, and completely frozen after using vector line tool. The quick fix with the undo redo trick does work but i prefer to stick to the swiping up quick fix we have been using so i can still undo further than the last move.

Thanks again Emily for keeping on it.

So after a month of it "fixing" for me, it's back freezing again. This is so frustrating. I can't identify anything that made it start working properly or going bad again.

did you find the solution ?

the all tools is cannot be touch, but we still can only brush. ONLY BRUSH , the solution for me is close the apps (from swipe in my ipad) and then back to the apps. but only work for one tap. after one tap. its happening again . damn adobe.

its working fine in procreate.

I haven't found a solution.  I'm just using procreate now which sucks because I want to use vector images.

Hi guys, quick update. My issue with this seems to have somehow resolved itself. I'm not sure how, think it must have been the lastest fresco update. Hopefully they have finally fixed it.

I'm still have the same exact problem right now.  Very problematic.  I have paid work to do and Adobe seems not to be very responsive.

Yep. I had 4 days of event illustration and the app was completely disappointing. I had to swipe up to get it unfrozen for 7 hours a day with each tool switch. Adobe is about to lose a 16-year customer over this incompetence.

Having exactly the same issue. Always with the vector brush. I can eyedrop and move the canvas but otherwise the UI is frozen. I switch apps and sometimes it starts working again. Very frustrating for a pro tool from Adobe.

I'm using iPadOS 16.5 / Ipad Pro 12.9 (3rd Gen). My Adobe Fresco is the latest version.

Hello @jeffthepeff,

We understand how frustrating it can be to experience performance issues in Fresco, especially in the middle of work. Would you mind updating the OS and the Fresco app to the latest version and checking if it helps?

(https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204204), (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202180)

Also, kindly check if all of your work is synced online (https://assets.adobe.com/cloud-documents). If yes, try deleting Fresco, restarting your device, and then reinstalling the app to check if it helps.

If the issue persists, kindly share a screen recording of the problem, along with the details of the exact version of Fresco installed, so we can investigate this further.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

I am experiencing a similar issue. Fresco keeps freezing constantly. Not just when using the vector brush but with any tool used. Every few minutes (maybe roughly every 2 minutes), Fresco freezes for about half a minute. After each freeze, it doesn't crash usually but resumes again. For about 2 minutes and then it freezes again. This is not just highly annoying and interrupting for the workflow, but it makes the use of this app inefficient, as it prolongs the time an artwork can be finished. This issue started about 2 months ago. I have used Fresco for over a year and had no issues with it.

I am working on an ipad 8th generation, have the latest OS, have plenty of free space on the device, no other apps running in the background, a good internet connection. I have tried deinstalling and reinstalling Fresco. Nothing worked so far. Help?

Hello @marenk73767572,

We understand how frustrating it can be to experience crashes in Fresco, especially in the middle of work. Would you mind sharing the crash report so that we can investigate this further with the team:

  • Open iPad Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data. You will see file names like “JetSam-2023-01-03-083327.ips” (2023-01-03 is the date in the log & 083327 is the time). Ensure you share the recent log file after the crash by looking at the timestamp.
  • Upload the file to (https://assets.adobe.com/files) and share a link to the file here or via DM.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

You're still not listening. There are no crash reports. The program freezes.
