Unable to Edit Layer

Community Beginner ,

I feel like I am missing something fundamental to Fresco as I cannot find it in any tutorial or online help. Whenever I "Merge Down" layers or whenever I use the "Fill" tool, I am no longer able to edit the layer I was working on and it either force opens a new layer or selects a layer that is not hidden. The layer is not locked (I did try locking and unlocking to see if that would work and closing and opening Fresco) and when I try duplicating the layer, it duplicates everything including being unable to edit it.

If you change from a Watercolour, Oil, or Pixel brush to a Vector the app will create a new layer.

If you then merge the Vector into the Watercolour, Oil or Pixel it becomes a Pixel layer which prevents the original vector line or shape from being edited with the Vector brushes again.

The first merge I used was between two vector layers (vector was the only one used). The other was just a fill. I did not use any of those three brushes. I also cannot edit the layer at all with any brush.

But, as a secondary question for when I encounter that situation, is there a way to make that layer editable again?

Once a layer is merged there is no way to unmerge unless you do so immediately with the Undo arrows.

If you can work with layer groups instead of merging down then you'll be better off.

So to create a layer group you select one layer and drag it onto the layer you want to combine it with. Release tap/mouse and the layers will be grouped. You'll still be able to go in and edit anything from either layer.

So merging of multiple Vector layers appears to turn them all into a single Vector.
Yiou could try using the selection tool to select specific areas you want to edit after merging.

I think all round your best option will be to group layers while you're still working on them. When finished if you need to merge for any reason do so at the end. Depending on your workflow maybe create a duplicate copy so you can merge one but still have the original editable version available as well.

Exactly.  If you want to keep the vector elements separate and editable,  I'd avoid using any pixel elements that could change things

Thank you, both for answering that secondary question! I will keep that in mind (especially the grouping and selection).

Do either of you have any insight to my original question? I'm wondering if I should just uninstall and reinstall if there was a problem with the download.
