Hi,

I'm getting an error message with Illustrator that says: "Can't open the illustration. The file is locked or in use."  ID:-54 (pictured below) and with Photoshop I am also getting an error (picture below) these error comes up whenever I drag a file or even try opening a file from my google drive.

Someone, please help! I've already uninstalled and reinstalled several times, as well as I gave both applications full disk access on my mac book. I am using the latest version of Illustrator and Photoshop.

The problem was solved by removing my email from the shared drive and adding it back, I also updated my Macbook to the latest version and reinstalled my Adobe suite.

To anyone facing a similar issue. Check if you have the preview pane/panel enabled in explorer or finder.

Hi @Charnelle Brown,

Is it happening with every file, or just those specific files?

Have you also tried to right-click on the file and choose "Open With > Adobe Illustrator / Photoshop"?

If you're able to get the file open, try saving a copy and renaming it. Then, make sure it opens as per normal before trashing the old one.

I can't copy the file to my desktop, when I do so I get this error. Also even when I select open nothing comes up on either application. (please see image attached)

It sounds like it could be a permissions issue as Anshul_Saini mentioned above. If you click "command" + "i" or File > Get info, do you have Read & Write priveledges?

Are you able to copy other files from that drive to your desktop, or is it just the one file that isn't working?

Can the other owner (of the shared drive) open the .ai file?

Hello @Charnelle Brown,

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with opening files in Illustrator and Photoshop. Based on the error messages, it seems like the files may be locked or in use by another application or have access/ enough permission to access them. Here are some possible solutions to try:

  • If you're facing this issue when saving a file, try changing the filename and try saving it to the desktop folder.
  • Download or move the file to the Desktop folder
  • Close the file from other applications or user profiles.
  • Try force-closing all versions of the app or restarting your computer.

I hope these solutions help! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Best,
Anshul Saini

  • Not having the issue saving the file but opening a file.
  • I tried to move/copy it and got this error (please see attached file)
  • I did close all applications and even removed them and the drive but still got the same issue.
  • I did close all versions and restarted but it didn't solve the problem

Does that also happen with locally saved files that are not in synchronized folders?

I am able to access files from one of my drives but not the other drive. This drive is shared by the owner, however, I have been using it for a while without complaints.

So when you put the file on the drive that is working, does the file then work as well?

You have read this general advice, right?
