Align to Key Object not working in Illustrator 2020 (24.2)

Why change what has always worked so well?

Trying to vertically/horizontally align objects to separate them equally no longer works the way it has for the last 20 years, so, now what?  When I try to align object it is requiring a "key object", this is not helpful at all and please tell me there's a way to re-set this back to a legacy setting?

Hi there,

Sorry about this trouble. We've fixed the bug with Align tool in the latest release. Please update Illustrator to v24.2.1 to get this fixed.

Here's a link with more details: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-bugs/suggestions/40681714-align-to-key-o...

Com a nova atualização do illustrator a ferramenta não funciona mais como devia. Ela agora só alinha os objetos, não os distribui mais.

Hi All, so I upgraded to the latest version of Illustrator 24.2, and I'm having a hard time with the option "snap to selection" from the toolbar as it will NOT stay like that, it goes back to "Snap to Artboard" no matter what. Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing?

This didn't happen with the previous version. thank you!

You mean the Align options?

There is a bug with the align function, but the developers are working on it already.

Glad to hear I'm not going crazy over here. Thank you and keep me posted. I may uninstall this version and go back until this gets resolved as my workflow relies on this feature heavily.

This is something that you should be able to turn off/on, right? Automatically assuming one of the objects as a key object may work for some people but not for me.

For clarity, I am using Windows 10 and have the latest CC update. I have a very specific workflow that I've used for many years and suddenly it's all getting upended by this new feature. There are so many times when I am working in a mode where I need everything to align to the artboard, but now I have to specify that every time instead of selecting it once and going on about my day.

I know, I can just adjust how I work, but the point of all this is that I now have to go through more steps to do the things that I want to do, and have been doing for years. I've spoken to all of my co-wokers on this and they all had the same problem. They thought it was their fault until I explained what was happening.

Perhaps this is already soemthing that you can turn off. If so, I would very much like to know how!

Oh, wonderful! I thought it was a feature as I believe something similar is present in InDesign. Thanks for the reply.

I am wondering, why one path is different selected than others. Defending of one I choose first one is more selected than others. Can someone tell me why?

So sick of arbitrary changes to how simple things work every major update to this program I use every day. In previous version of illustrator, selecting 2 objects in illustrator, then clicking one of them, would put the palette in "align to key object" mode, then deselecting the objects would revert to "align to selection" or "align to artboard" mode. Now once you get into "align to key object" mode, you have to MANUALLY revert back to either align mode. THIS IS TERRIBLE DESIGN. You're makign me click more! It's bad! Why change it?! Seem like you'd have to go out of your way to make this change which makes this program worse! It's something like this every major "update."

Maybe test your $50/month software before releasing it? Just an idea!

As I type this, I'm reinstalling AI for the second time this month. This time without saved prefs. Please, Adobe, make this storied and remarkable piece of software STABLE before you talk about giving us new features. I don't want a new icon, I want not to have to explain to my boss that I didn't get anything done this morning because my industry-standard software didn't work.

  1. Crashes CONSTANTLY. Connect or disconnect a display: crash. Wake computer from sleep: crash. Check email in a different app: crash. Literally, walk away from my desk or use another app for a while: crash. This has been happening since March.
  2. Intermittently doesn't update files hosted in the library/cloud.
  3. When a filename in that library is *selected*, you start typing a new name and it starts selecting tools with keyboard shortcuts.
  4. When making a change to width or height, proportions are locked even if the lock proportions button is unselected.
  5. Align buttons randomly throw the non-key object hundreds of pixels out of place when you're trying to align to center. This one has been going on for years.
  6. New real-time drawing intermittently doesn't work, even on a new document, with only a single vector rectangle and one short sentence of text.
  7. Can't resize certain panel group widths (this started today).

I've been using Illustrator for around 25 years now and a few generations ago, Adobe introduced the option to "align to key object" in the alignment panel. For some reason this is often the default for aligning two or more selected items and I usually have to de-select it and select "align to selection" manually. It's another step and disrupts workflow constantly.

I have never found a use for the "key object" function and find it incredibly irritating that Adobe has tried to force this into the way that I work. I would just like to have it go away or at least have it stop being the default when I am trying to align to selections.

Looked through the boards and haven't found a similar complaint. I can't be the only person who is bothered by this function.

The key object is now forcing distribute object to no longer distrubute the objects, but rather just align them to the key object.

Is it a new "feature" that key objects stay selected until new keyobject is chosen?

I work in fashion, and am trying to align 3 objects with even distribution. The problem is that all of the align options tend to center align. Is that a possible bug with this latest update? Any feedback/assistance will be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

Hi! So I figured it out and it was really 101, I had to choose align to selection. Thank you for reading my post. Happy Drawing Everyone!!

There was a bug, it's recently been fixed with the latest update:

Illustrator v24.2.1 has resolved this issue, the alignment is back to normal as far as I can tell from my end.  I did have to reboot my computer to see the update in Adobe Creative Cloud desktop, after installing the alignment tool is working fine.

Hope this is helpful!

Hello. My Illustrator just updated and now my Align Distribute tools are not working. When I try to align a vertical line of items, it aligns them on top of each other instead of distributing them evenly. I've noticed a number of bugs with this latest update in more than one Adobe program. This is the first one I'm posting about. Please let me know if there is a fix for this one. Thank you.

Same here. Everytime an update comes out.. it's months of issues. C'mon Adobe.
