Well, are you sure the fonts in question even contain all the necessary glyphs? Many "free" fonts omit a lot of special characters, ligatures, contextual alternates and so on and only contain the basic alphabet. Likewise, some fonts intentionally leave out characters to coerce you into buying a more complete commercial version. Outside that of course check the relevant glyph substitution settings in the character palette's flyout menu.
