Can I Select All Objects of One Color At the Same Time to Convert Color?

I am working with some files from Digital Juice (pre-made Illustrator objects). I would like to target selecting items by color and then converting them to another color. Is this possible or do I have to go through each object one by one to change the color?

Thanks!

Select > Same > Fill color

You might alternatively simply select all and then use Edit > Edit colors > Recolor artwork

Hi Everyone,

We understand this is an old post, and while there have been various recommendations from our experts, we'd like to provide an updated and consolidated set of suggestions for the benefit of new users who come across this post. These suggestions include the latest steps and newer features that can significantly enhance your workflow.

As all the experts have suggested already, you can definitely select all objects of one specific color at the same time in Illustrator to convert their color. Here's how you can do it:

  1. Select one object in your artwork that has the color you want to change.
  2. Go to the "Select" menu at the top.
  3. Choose "Same" and then "Fill Color" from the dropdown menu. There are other options to select from, like Fill & stroke.
  4. This will select all objects with the same fill color.
  5. With the objects selected, you can now change their color by using the Swatches panel or other color adjustment tools like Recolor.

As an alternative, you can use the magic of Generative Recolor and transform the hues/colors in your artwork with text prompts or sample themes.

I am using a drawing from Adobe stock images. I want sections to be different colors and stroked.  But if I select by color, I sometimes get only that portion of color on an overlapping object. I have people climbing stairs and using the magic wand, I click on the portion of a leg (distinct color) on the stair is selected only. I click on the top of the body (same color) and only the portion not overapping the stair is selected.  Help!

Please show.

And maybe it would be a good idea to create a new thread.

The menu has apparently changed.  I don't see a Select > Same Fill Color.  Trying to find the equivalent.

Hi All! Thanks for the super tip. I am using CS2 and have found that Select > Same > Fill Color works!

Appreciated! :)

Select one item with the color fill you want to change. Then go to "select > same > fill color" in the top menu. Illustrator will select every item on your page with the same fill color. There are also other selects you can use. (Mac/Ill CS3)

If there are slight variations in the color that you'd still like to pick up you can use the magic wand too.
