Can't adjust text box in Illustrator

Hello. I can't adjust text boxes in Illustrator without distorting the text. I have set the option for the bounding box to be visible and I have also tried using the direct selection tool, but that makes the bounding box disappear so there's nothing to click and drag. Any ideas?
