Can you edit objects in a finished pattern?

I have created a pattern that contains ten individual embedded pdf objects, and now I would like to edit (update) one of the objects in it. Is there any way to do this without having to remake the pattern? Thanks so much for any help!

Is it a pattern swatch? Double-click on the swatch to edit if so.

Ok thanks! Yes it is a pattern swatch. I just went in there and replaced the object with the new one. I was a little confused by the embedded vs linked objects and working that out. So I was trying to unembed the object in the pattern editing screen and could not find a way to do it. (Is there a way?) Because really I just wanted to update the linked file and then re-embed it into the pattern. But this turned out to be a fine workaround (and maybe the only way to do it). Thanks again!

You could do that the old fashioned way: drag the swatch icon out of the panel and on to the artboard. Select the embedded image with the direct selection tool. Select 'Unembed' from the control panel/properties, save the image. Relink it with the new image. Re-embed it, then drag it back over the swatch thumbnail while holding Alt.
