Imagine you could assign progressive thickness to parts of a stroke to have a modulated line (thinking of calligraphy).

The same way you get to choose the different colors of a gradient, you asign pins for different values of stroke width.

I agree withocculus.nigra . It's not implemented the way you have visualized it, but it's the same idea, unless I'm missing something in your suggestion. And it lets you control the width from side to side of the path as well as overall width.
