I've found this is a persistant problem lately. I'm running the latest Mac OS on a new mac mini, and the latest version of Illustrator. I don't have any other apps running. The placed image is less than 4mb and when hidden there's no problem.

I've followed the advice in the article, which did not make any difference. It could be that my Mac doesn't have enough memory, as it's just 8GB. But the artwork isn't complex - it's a few lines with a very small placed image. I've been working on much larger artwork files without a problem (and I can open these and continue to work on them), but in the last few days new artwork has the drag lagging issue.

How much RAM is installed?
Do you have an app called Rectangle or Magnet running?
Also no browser open?
Does it work better when you boot into Safe Mode? And then start Illustrator? (note: this is for testing purposes. If it works better in Safe Mode, then something on your computer is causing it, which you then have to figure out)

I don't have rectangle or magnet, no other apps running bar illustrator. The problem occurs in safe mode. It could be that my 8GB of memory isn't enough.

THat could indeed be the case. Is the image a JPEG? In that case in Illustrator it is unpacked and is much larger than 4 MB

The image is around 800 x 1100px - so very small. After playing around, I found if I view using CPU the problem goes away for now. I also turned off 'Use real time drawing and rendering' and the problem seemed to go away, even if I turn back to GPU. So I think this is a bug in this version of AI.

Hello @Andrew23038777obc3,
Thanks for sharing the details. To investigate this further, would you mind trying to run Illustrator under a different administrator account (macOS) to see if it helps? If the problem persists, kindly share links to sample files after uploading them to Dropbox/Google Drive/etc., and a screen recording of the problem (https://adobe.ly/4aP62Mj), so we can investigate this further.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Anubhav
