Envelope distort from photoshop to Illustrator file incompatability

Im trying to envelope distort an image in Illustrator with a photoshop image but I get this message >>>>Screen Shot 2018-06-19 at 4.33.53 PM.png

I have tried Ping / jpeg

So I can reproduce that error by choosing.

Object > Envelope Distort > Warp with Top Object. and if I don't have an object above the type (Arrange > Bring to Front) I get that error.

So your object you are warpign to must be on top of your text.

the image that I want to conform to the droplet shape is in front .

I can create envelope warps with basic text/words but when I try to add effects or something more sophisticated it gives me this error. The selection that I would  like to conform to the droplet shape is a smart object . maybee that is somehow an issue ?.

Since when are there Smart Objects in Illustrator?

the image that I want to conform to the droplet shape is in front .

Is the alert not plenty clear on that the Path needs to be the top object?
