Question

File size huge when exporting linked files that need to be InDesign compatible

Hi,

I'm having an issue in making my file size functional whilst still being compatible with my InDesign document.

My illustrator file has 4 linked photographs and when saving my file (unticking link files, but ensuring it is PDF compatible) my file size is over 150mb. When I untick PDF compatible I can bring it right down to 18mb but it is then incompatible with InDesign.

Is there a work around to this that anyone is aware of?

Thanks 🙂

Hello, zoemeginsdavies
You can save it as an optimized PDF file separately from the original AI file and link it to InDesign.

Yes, remove the images from the Illustrator composition, Save As a new .ai file, then reassemble in InDesign. Place (link) the 4 images directly in InDesign one-at-a-time, then place the native Illustrator content and position everything the way you had it in Illustrator.

And BTW, I wouldn't call that a workaround; I'd say it should be standard workflow. Illustrator can do page layout, but InDesign is just about always the better choice.

Thanks for your response. It's not totally perfect for my exact situation as I am using illustrator to create a diagram that incorporates photographic images rather than using it for page layout but definately good to note.
