Gradient for curved text

Hello all,
Assigning a colour gradient to a normal text works without problems.
Rectangle with gradient, then the text over it and finally create a cut mask.
But as soon as I try it with a curved text, it doesn't work - no matter what I try.

Can you help me?

    Distort it how? I'm trying to acheive the CURVES you have at the top of your screen capture Ton.

    As Lukas already mentioned, no need for masks.

    It is best to remove the default black fill for the text and set it to none.

    Add a new gradient fill in the Appearannce panel and distort it (with optional distorting the gradient in the Envelope options) or put it along a path.

    Distort it how? I'm trying to ahieve the top word CURVES in your screen shot above. But i am only getting the bottom results.

    Use an envelope (not the effect)

    Edit the envelope options so that they distort linear gradients

      When you say curved text are you meaning type on path or text with an envelope distortion?
      An Envelope distort cannot be used as clipping mask, but can be used as opacity mask. 
      If you select the envelope in the layers panel you should be able to add a gradient to it's appearance in the appearance pannel. See screenshot. 


      Could you show a screen shot (with layers and appearance panel showing)? You should be able to do this without a clipping mask (unless it is a freeform gradient)

          Warping text it becomes an envelope in the layers.
