You can't allocate RAM to Illustrator. It takes what it needs and what is available.

You can assign virtual memory in the preferences. But when there's not enough disk space available then this won't have any desired effect.

What exactly are you placing?

How large is it? In case it is a JPEG, we would need to know the uncompressed size. It might just be too large.

What are you designing? Does the image need to be that large?

Have you done a restart recently?

Have you closed all other apps?

How much RA

Please answer each of these questions if you can, or say if you need help answering them.

1. What exact version of Illustrator?

2. Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

3. What operating system?

4. How much RAM is installed in your system?

5. How much free space is on your system disk?

6. What is the exact error message you get?

7. Does Illustrator stop after the message?

8. You say the quality gets lower and lower. Please explain exactly what you mean.

Is there an Apple somewhere an your computer? In that case it would be a Mac.

Please read the system documentation on how to find out your specifications.

Manuals for Apple: Apple - Support - Manuals

Manuals for Windows 10: Windows 10 user guide PDF and manual

Windows 8 Download the official Windows 8 user guide - CNET

230 GB most likely is the hard disk. It's not that big. Are those 230 GB free or is that the total size of it? In that case there might not be much left.

Please quote the exact wording of the error. Make a screenshot if you cannot remember it. It's important.

What exactly is in that file? Where does that file come from? Are there effects, transparency? How many paths?

Why do you switch from Photoshop to Illustrator with the same file? That doesn not make too much sense.

How much RAM is installed (for Illustrator 8 GB RAM is recommended)? Looks like you run Windows 10. It needs a lot of RAM for itself already.

This is the wrong screen. You need to run Task Manager. To see the option, right click on a BLANK part of the task bar at the bottom of the screen. Sorry I don't know the Korean name to look for.

For checking how we are with memory in Windows 10, please try this AT THE TIME OF THE ERROR with the error message still on screen.

Right click on the task bar.

Choose Task Manager.

Click the Performance tab.

You should see something like this:

Please post what you see (screen shot is ideal).

umm.... sorry i am korean. and i am not sure what i have to see. but  i think that is this one. the program size is 2.46kb. and allocated disk size is only 4kb. is it normal?

and, normally, i wanna put 800.800 size photo in Ai. i think this is not too large. that's why i think my Ai has something wrong.
