how do I color fill a pattern?

I want to change the color of the  kites pattern to the color of the stripes as per the photo.


Im a complete noob so if you could tell me where to start that would be great.

Was this pattern created in Illustrator or was it sourced from somewhere else?

If somewhere else, is it an image?

It was created in AI. I have just given you a sample so you know what I am talking about. 
the pattern is a layer. 
In the mean time I have figured out how  to do it,
So I have recolored it using the recolor artwork wheel thing and then figured it out from there...is that all you do?

wow that was easy.
And you guys charge money for doing this?

You can do it that way, or you can drag the pattern out of the swatches panel on to the artboard, edit it, then drag it back over the original swatch while holding alt.
