    The thread is old!

But a way to have this as an option directly in UI, in Preferences, is still a thing we need.

It's awfully frustrating to change the basic instinctive ways of working with objects. Especially when you don't have any options to change it back to old ones. For me it's like to move randomly cmd/alt/shift on the keyboard.

I'd like to add my request for disabling live shapes, it's awful and counterproductive and it's very, very frustrating in all ways. I know how to expand live shapes, i just don't want to do it for evey shape i make because i won't use live shapes EVER — the old dead ones were totally ok for me.

Then please, make your request here. For whatever reason, Adobe reps don't seem to respond to the Illustrator forum unless the word "crash" appears in the title.

I'd like to add my request to be able to disable live shapes.  I just updated to the newest version today and it is already driving me crazy.  I don't need the new ellipse handle functions, I could already resize proportionally with the shift key.  I want to be able to squash and stretch as before.  I don't want to have to squash from the top or bottom and then rotate.  What a headache.  I don't want to have to "expand" each time I draw an ellipse.  Please allow the disable feature, Adobe.  I'm sure there are times when the live feature would be nice, but for many other times, its an unnecessary complication.

How can we get Adobe to reverse this, especially the "Smart" line is a completely unnecessary tool and apparently impossible to convert into a normal line (for me at least).

Object menu > Shape > Expand Shape is the way to convert it to a normal object.

A benefit of Live Shapes is that you do not have to switch to another tool when you want to transform them.

That is hardly a benefit, since other tools are a single keystroke away. All the extra cruft and inconvenience that Live Shapes add is a severe handicap for people who already know how to use those tools.

I agree, it seems to be aimed at people with less experience and slows down the people who use it often.

I have put in a request to Adobe.

I find this new feature very frustrating. Especially on the 'line' shape.

I am not sure the benefit of having a line a smart object, but I do know the downside. It means it does not have a square bounding box around it, which is very important to my work flow and to ensure the line snaps to 45 degrees rotations. in addition, it is no longer as easy to drag the line out maintaining the same angle too (think perspective lines).

Also, unlike all the other live shapes, when you 'Expand' a line you have to expand the stroke. The only work around I see to this is to add an unnecessary vector point to the line to convert it to a normal line.

This is adding extra steps and inefficiency to my workflow Adobe, I would appreciate if you could add an option to disable.

    Thank you,

    Sean.

I am also now getting this warning when trying to use the line tool. Specifically when I click on an existing point.

I agree. Now that ellipses and lines are also live by default, I spend an awful lot of time hitting my "Expand" keyboard shortcut. There has never been a single time I've wanted my shapes to be live in the past year of enduring this "feature".

Thanks for the tip, I hope however that they will implement a disable function soon! Please Adobe...

I agree. Not all of us want to work with Live Shapes. Using Expand is not a good option as it does other things to objects besides removing the Live Shape feature - like converting dynamic arrow heads to static shapes.

Unfortunately you can't. With the new object still selected, use the Expand from the Object menu to get a no-longer Live path.
