Question

How to apply stroke to separated objects?

I have searched tirelessly for this solution, and have gotten SO close using the offset path effect, but it applies the stroke to both objects individualy rather than around the entire piece.  I've tried uniting, grouping, etc, and it still does it.

Im looking to have it look like this (apologies for the crude rendition).

Any tips?  Thanks!

Zach,

You may:

1) Select both objects and Ctrl/Cmd+C+B to copy them behind the original objects, then hide those;

2) Select the copy objects and Object>Path>Offset Path by a positive amount sufficient to close all gaps between them;

3) Pathfinder>Unite or Merge;

4) Object>Path>Offset Path by the same amount as in 2), only negative, then Object>Path>Offset Path (or use the offset path effect if you must) by the desired offset; you may do it in one step with an offset equalling the desired offset minus the one from 2);

5) Show the original objects hidden in 1).
