Your type in this file has a stroke at the character level. Remove it and add one at the object level, then drag it below 'Characters'.

I'll go through it on the file as it is now:

1. select your text with one of the selection tools (black or white arrow)

2. open the Appearance panel

3. Double-click on Characters.

4. select the black stroke

5. Click on the trash can to delete it.]

6. Click on Type at the top of the appearance panel.

Sorry, I should go into more detail. Type has two levels of appearance: an object-level and a character-level. Remove your stroke there and click on 'Type'. Add the stroke there and drag it below 'Characters'.

Are you sure it's not just invisible, as you have a white fill?

These are the steps from the beginning I would use to create your desired result:

1. Type text.

2. Apply fill colour to text.

3. Open the appearance panel. click Add New Stroke

4. Drag stroke below ' Characters'.
