Question

How to retain top layer group style when turning sublayers into separate top layers

I have a logo that needs 12 separate top layers for animation in AE.

Currently, the logo consists of 2 top layer groups that each hold 12 sub-layers, for a total of 24 sub-layers.  Each top layer has a style applied that evenly distributes over its 12 child sub-layers (one top layer group style is a gradient, the other top layer group effect is a SVG blur).

I need to pair the 24 sub-layers from each group to make 12 separate top layers (one gradient sub-layer pairs with one blur sub-layer).  What I can't figure out is how to retain the distribution style that the current top layer groups provide as I pair sub-layers & make them 12 separate top layers.

When I try, I lose my current top layer group style.  If I reapply the gradient to the new top layer, the distribution of the gradient is now focused on new top layer's artwork.  I need it to retain the distribution style it had when it was a sub-layer.

I hope I explained this well enough & someone knows how?  Or knows a better way to accomplish this?

Can you provide two sample .ai files? One that shows the initial state and another one that shows the state after the pairing?

Also, which version of Illustrator are you using?

    I'm on 23.0.1

And to provide those?  Screenshots suffice? Or actual ai files uploaded?

    Thank you!

I have a sample .ai ready to go - don't know how to upload it here - tried figuring it out & googling it to no avail - could you tell me how to upload it to this post??

    Thx Kurt!

Unfortunately, you cannot attach it to posts in the forum, but you can use a common file sharing server like Google Drive , for example.
