Hi,

I have an object with a pattern fill that I want to us to create a new pattern swatch....  I am working on design for some fabric... I have created, for example a table with a tablecloth and have used a check pattern (that I created) on the tablecloth.  I now want to use the table and tablecloth as an object in a repeated pattern as a fill in a larger object... Illustrator won't allow me... it just says "Patterns can not contain anything painted with a pattern"

Any ideas for a work around?

Daniel,

What happens if you Object>Expand Appearance?

You cannot make a new pattern from objects that already contain a pattern.

You may have a pattern on a stroke, or  opacity to set 0% on a pattern  fill. Please review your artwork, and remove any patterns assigned.

I am having the same error. It is practically impossible for me to check every object for the color fill. Is there any other workaround. I already tried to fill every object with a correct color swatch. I just can't seem to locate which one is filled with a pattern swatch.. Please help. I may just have to lose my work if I can't convert this into a pattern. Thank you so much.

Did you try Expand Appearance as suggested by Jacob above?
