Question

Illustrator cc can't see menu items or panels after changing UI display size

I'm just posting this here because maybe it will help someone else.

I had changed the User Interface display size by going to Edit > Preferences > User Interface

I changed the display size to large.

I run one extra monitor from my work laptop and use this external monitor for my design work, just fyi as this might be part of the problem.

I restarted Illustrator cc and the UI was larger, much easier to work with (Less carpel tunnel pain).

This was fine, however I noticed I could no longer see my swatch book.

I turned the swatch panel on and off under Window > Swatches several times.

I then googled the issue and came to a post on stack exhcnage that explained that

in most instances you have to find a menu that deals with color and click the little icon in the lower left of the panel

that looks like a book:

https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/21196/no-color-swatches-available-in-illustrator

I tried several workarounds to this until I realized it was probably the UI.

I resized the UI in the edit preferences menu back to small.

I could now see the swatch book.

I moved it closer to the center of the art board.

I resized the UI back to large and restarted illustrator cc.

I can now see the swatch book.

I also had to move the Appearance panel as this was also hidden apparently.

This seems like a glaring technical issue with resizing the UI because the

program is unable to recalibrate the positioning of panels within the viewable area of the

screen after resizing.

I'm guessing that resizing the UI changes the actual pixel sizes of various UI

elements or changes their size based off a scalable percentage.

However it retains the information for the x,y positioning of panels and UI

elements or scales the x,y coordinates as well, resulting in panels that float

outside the actual screen area.

Hi Mitch,

Thanks for sharing this. We really appreciate your contribution to the Illustrator community. I tried replicating this issue at my end but unfortunately, I was unable to do so.

Could you please share a few more details so that we can forward it to the product team if required?

  • OS (Exact version of Windows/MAC)
  • Version of Illustrator
  • A small video of the issue.

Looking forward to your response.

Regards,

Srishti

Thanks for sharing that information.

Perhaps you already know that Window > Workspace > New Workspace you can save a workspace, which includes saving the position of the panels. Maybe that will be helpful for you.
