Illustrator Crashes When Copying - Illustrator 29.6.1 / Win 11

I’m experiencing an issue with Adobe Illustrator where I cannot copy anything. Both Ctrl+C and right-click > Copy cause the software to crash immediately. This has been happening repeatedly throughout the day.

Could you please advise on the cause and any possible solution? It’s really frustrating that Illustrator can’t handle such a basic function like copying without crashing.

Gracias! Espero su respuesta

Hello @Nadia37972677f0tk,

We have received reports from several customers that the latest Windows Defender security intelligence update - 1.435.148.0 has potentially fixed this issue.
Could you try installing the update and letting us know if it helps?

Experiencing this issue for the first time today, August 7th.

None of the workarounds are working for me.

My company will not allow me to work in Safe Mode.

In addition to this issue I have had a notification that "Adobe Acrobat 2017 has reached end-of-support."
These messages started popping up at about the same time fraome as the "copy crash" issue.
is it possible that they are related?

It's August 7th and I'm also having this issue.

Are there any news on why this is happening?

Thank you.

Hi @sutham_1326,

Thanks for sharing those details, and I'm really sorry to hear that Illustrator keeps crashing when you open a file.

Based on the error message, it looks like the crash is related to a Windows system component. If you’re seeing the Adobe crash reporter dialog when this happens, please go ahead and submit the report and share the email address you entered there, so I can check the logs with the team. Reference:

It would also help if you could try launching Illustrator in Safe Mode and from a new local admin user account, just to rule out any interference from system extensions or profile-related issues:

In addition, please try running Illustrator in Windows Compatibility Mode by right-clicking the Illustrator shortcut, going to Properties > Compatibility, and checking the option for Run this program in compatibility mode.

Let me know how it goes.

Looking forward to your repsonse.

Abhishek

Hi everyone,

Thanks again for your continued patience and for sharing detailed reports around the crash issue when copying in Illustrator 29.6.1 and 29.7 on Windows 11.

I’ve connected with the product team, and they’ve asked if affected users could try temporarily disabling Microsoft Defender and then test the copy workflow again in Illustrator.

Your help in testing this will greatly assist the investigation. Please remember to re-enable Defender once you've tested.

Let us know if disabling Defender makes any difference or if the issue persists.  We’re actively working toward a resolution.

Thanks,
Abhishek Rao

Dear Adobe... You can add another frustrated Adobe Illustrator to the complaint department. Like other users, this problem has started in the last 48 hours (today is August 8, 2025). I work on a Microsoft Surface in a corporate, security protected environment and Illustrator is 95% of my workday. I CAN NOT COPY OR PASTE WITHOUT ILLUSTRATOR CRASHING! I have installed no new software this month. I am running Windows 10 Enterprise with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6820HQ CPU @ 2.70GHz 2.71 GHz

Are you on a Dell?  A couple of people in this community have stated they're on Dell computers and the issue has started after a Dell update. I'm on a Dell as well with this issue but not sure of when my latest update was.  Just wondering if that's a factor.

I am also have this problem. but I found that after save it into eps format, you can then copy and paste without crashing program. I temporarily use this method to continue my work first.

Who else is trying to use work arounds, then forgets and hits the copy/cut only to be reminded by that frozen white arrow? I'm laughing now, but will be crying soon. C'mon team Adobe! You've got this!

I'm using Adobe Illustrator version 29.7.1. When working on a new file, copy and cut functions work fine. However, when I open older project files, Illustrator crashes, and also when I try to copy or drag vector artwork from those old files into a new one the issue happening.

I have managed to get around the issue by saving a file which was previously crashing - created on an older version of Illustrator (within the last 2 months) - as an EPS.

Close Illustrator. Then open illustrator and the EPS file. I can now copy and paste without any crashes.
I have yet to test properly if then saving as an AI file again brings the issue back.

This is working for me - if I save my old illustrator file as an EPS file, I can open it and copy and paste without crashes. However, if I then resave that file as an .ai file and try and open it again, it goes back to crashing.
