Illustrator Crashes When Copying - Illustrator 29.6.1 / Win 11

Community Beginner ,
Jul 31, 2025 Jul 31, 2025

I’m experiencing an issue with Adobe Illustrator where I cannot copy anything. Both Ctrl+C and right-click > Copy cause the software to crash immediately. This has been happening repeatedly throughout the day.

Could you please advise on the cause and any possible solution? It’s really frustrating that Illustrator can’t handle such a basic function like copying without crashing.

Hello @Nadia37972677f0tk,

We have received reports from several customers that the latest Windows Defender security intelligence update - 1.435.148.0 has potentially fixed this issue.
Could you try installing the update and letting us know if it helps?

From my testing I am confident it is a Windows Update that is causing issue. From my testing, on a freshly imaged computer (with a three month old image) Illustrator works, after Windows Updates it does not work.

But, uninstalling the available recent windows updates does not correct the problem. Do you have a specific KB that is causing the issue? If you can give a KB number I can disable it on our system and retest.

Is there a more effective solution than uninstalling and rolling back the Windows update? Many professionals rely on it for their work in IT companies, and reverting to a previous version isn't always feasible. Better work on fixing the problem as soon as possible and make the world happy.

Dear Anubhav,

Thank you for the update.
Could you please let us know which KB update needs to be removed?
Microsoft has recently released several new patches, so it’s possible that one of them may need to be uninstalled.

We cannot role back on Windows Security updates, as its against our Company policy.

Please release an update asap to fix this 'copy bug'.

Thanks

@Anubhav M A user on here said Adobe has released an update that has fixed the problem. Is this true? I don't see an update in my CC app.

Unfortunately I work for a bigger organisation so rolling back the windows update is not an option. It doesn't seem to matter now if the file is old or new any copying crashes the programme. What I have been doing though is creating an untitled document, dragging it to one side and then with objects I want to copy I simply drag them onto this document and then drag them back to my working document. Its a pain but it works. Hopefully a temporary solution.

Have you looked at the difference in hardware?
My work i7 13th gen on DDR4 crashes, but my home i7 14th gen on DDR5 is unaffected.

Like most people, I find "Workarounds" unacceptable and not possible. I'm using private equipment as a workaround.

Agree and disagree on hardware, two of design team members have issue on 'Copy/Cut bug' but another designer is not affected, all three are using same Surface Pro with same specs.

Adobe does not seem embarrased enough by this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS SHAMEFUL that you have put thousands of designers and agencies out in the wind by blaming Windows. Instead of offering a "just roll back WIndows" solution that NONE of us can implement because of IT network protocols, how about rolling back your Illustrator update to a time when there wasn't a conflict until you and Microsoft can work it out!??!!??!?!?!??!?

The workaround is to uncheck this feature "Paste Remembers Layers".  So please open an illustrator document, go to the Layers section on the right, click on the hamburger.  Uncheck the feature, then test copy/paste. I've confirmed this.

If it helps with the issue, here's what I found using the Windows Event viewer to see where the problem originates...

Faulting application name: Illustrator.exe, version: 29.7.1.8, time stamp: 0x688ca977
Faulting module name: ole32.dll, version: 10.0.22621.5415, time stamp: 0xa75d2b41
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0000000000087471
Faulting process id: 0x0x8128
Faulting application start time: 0x0x1DC0BB1A133714B

Screenshot 2025-08-12 141652.png

I'm not super well-versed in troubleshooting these kind of things, but according to google :
The ole32.dll exception code c0000005 indicates an Access Violation error within the ole32.dll library. This means the application is attempting to access memory that it is not permitted to, often due to a null pointer dereference or memory corruption.

Now, how this came to be, who's fault it is (Adobe or Microsoft, or both?) I have no idea. But this need to be fixed ASAP. This is unnacceptable, given that it's been weeks since this has started to happen. You'd think that being the juggernaut they are, Adobe would have the resources to tackle this issue quickly. This is bad. And I'm not saying this because I'm inconvenienced by the issue. This is a MAJOR issue that renders an application almost useless. Seriously Adobe?

Same issue since last week!😩😩😩 Have tried all solutions from previous comments but with no luck -

:cross_mark:save as eps

:cross_mark:close clipped board history

:cross_mark:update or reinstall illustrator to latest version

For most of us who are using company pc/laptop, we cannot close window defendor neither roll back windows 11 updates, it is not practical to ask your users run such testing and think its just small group of people that are complaining - NOT AT ALL!!!😤

If Adobe thinks this 17 pages(could be more!) community thread is not a really big problem for the company to look it more seriously, I don't mind to post a complain everyday until the issue got fixed!

I uninstalled Adobe Illustrator using the Creative Cloud Cleaner and reinstalled it, and that seemed to do the trick.

tried this one just recently, after reinstalling Adobe Illustrator 29.7.1, the problem persists. I also tried it with the lower versions (28 and 28.7.6), still, after reinstalling, once I copy (ctrl + c) it crashes.

I was able to find a work around for my user I would like to share.

As previously sited, Web-based beta of illustrator DOES allow copy/paste but this is not a viable solution so we will only be using it momentarily as part of the work around.

Here we go:

1.)Open Creative Cloud Desktop and click the "Apps" icon.

2.)Find Illustrator in the list and click the three little dots next to it and select "Open in Browser"

3.) Upload the file you need to work on.

4.)After your file uploads click the button to "Open in Desktop app".

5.)You should now be able to do what you want to do without crashing inside the Desktop app.

For whatever reason the process of uploading a file to the Web based app must sanitize the file. Step-4 takes the uploaded sanitized file and downloads it to the Desktop app. When following this order the copy problem was eliminated.

Understanding this is only a work around and not a solution - a deadline is a deadline!

Hope this process can help some of you as well.
