Illustrator Crashes When Copying - Illustrator 29.6.1 / Win 11

I’m experiencing an issue with Adobe Illustrator where I cannot copy anything. Both Ctrl+C and right-click > Copy cause the software to crash immediately. This has been happening repeatedly throughout the day.

Could you please advise on the cause and any possible solution? It’s really frustrating that Illustrator can’t handle such a basic function like copying without crashing.

Gracias! Espero su respuesta

Hello @Nadia37972677f0tk,

We have received reports from several customers that the latest Windows Defender security intelligence update - 1.435.148.0 has potentially fixed this issue.
Could you try installing the update and letting us know if it helps?

This is a critical issue impacting our entire design team since 8th July.
Problem: Every time we copy any text in Adobe Illustrator, it freezes and crashes instantly – 100% reproducible.

We have already tried all standard fixes:

  1. Uninstall & reinstall Illustrator – no change
  2. Updated Windows & graphics drivers – no change
  3. Adobe Support: Granted folder-level rights, installed Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable – no change
  4. Tested on a completely fresh laptop – no change
  5. All possible troubleshooting steps exhausted – still the same problem

Impact: We cannot work at all, deadlines are at risk, and productivity has come to a standstill.
Case number: ADB-41159593-K7R6 – Adobe closed the case without resolving the issue.

We urgently need help from the community or Adobe engineers.
Has anyone else faced this? Is there a temporary workaround?

did you try to use 'Alt' instead of 'Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V' (temporarily)?

Illustrator crashes when copy and paste, I uninstall the latest version and tried a previous version is the same issue.  It just happened today 8/13 and most latest Windows update patches was updated in July.  It seems the issue not come from Windows update.  Please fix it ASAP, all business operation is stuff because of Illustrator.

Adobe released an update today, and it resolved the issue for me. I hope it did for everyone else as well.

Not ideal, but another option that works for me:

Open the corrupted file and re-save it. After you save it, the below window will show up. Uncheck all boxes.

then work on the newly saved file.

This work-around appears to be working fine in our org.

Thanks @h.enizi, unfortunately it doesn't work for my organisation.

I was able to find a work around for my user I would like to share.

As previously sited, Web-based beta of illustrator DOES allow copy/paste but this is not a viable solution so we will only be using it momentarily as part of the work around.

Here we go:

1.)Open Creative Cloud Desktop and click the "Apps" icon.

2.)Find Illustrator in the list and click the three little dots next to it and select "Open in Browser"

3.) Upload the file you need to work on.

4.)After your file uploads click the button to "Open in Desktop app".

5.)You should now be able to do what you want to do without crashing inside the Desktop app.

For whatever reason the process of uploading a file to the Web based app must sanitize the file. Step-4 takes the uploaded sanitized file and downloads it to the Desktop app. When following this order the copy problem was eliminated.

Understanding this is only a work around and not a solution - a deadline is a deadline!

Hope this process can help some of you as well.

Not sure what happened here but the problem seems to have disappeared. I can copy and paste without Illustrator crashing.

Also seems to be fixed. No fancy cloud tricks, old and new files, both V28 and V29.
Note that I installed this today:
2025-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5063875)

Through Windows Update.

Not yet! Some folks are stuck in past 2weeks struggle while Adobe plays 'Guess Who' with their questions!

I uninstalled Adobe Illustrator using the Creative Cloud Cleaner and reinstalled it, and that seemed to do the trick.

tried this one just recently, after reinstalling Adobe Illustrator 29.7.1, the problem persists. I also tried it with the lower versions (28 and 28.7.6), still, after reinstalling, once I copy (ctrl + c) it crashes.

Same issue since last week!😩😩😩 Have tried all solutions from previous comments but with no luck -

❌save as eps

❌close clipped board history

❌update or reinstall illustrator to latest version

For most of us who are using company pc/laptop, we cannot close window defendor neither roll back windows 11 updates, it is not practical to ask your users run such testing and think its just small group of people that are complaining - NOT AT ALL!!!😤

If Adobe thinks this 17 pages(could be more!) community thread is not a really big problem for the company to look it more seriously, I don't mind to post a complain everyday until the issue got fixed!

If it helps with the issue, here's what I found using the Windows Event viewer to see where the problem originates...

Faulting application name: Illustrator.exe, version: 29.7.1.8, time stamp: 0x688ca977
Faulting module name: ole32.dll, version: 10.0.22621.5415, time stamp: 0xa75d2b41
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0000000000087471
Faulting process id: 0x0x8128
Faulting application start time: 0x0x1DC0BB1A133714B

I'm not super well-versed in troubleshooting these kind of things, but according to google :
The ole32.dll exception code c0000005 indicates an Access Violation error within the ole32.dll library. This means the application is attempting to access memory that it is not permitted to, often due to a null pointer dereference or memory corruption.

Now, how this came to be, who's fault it is (Adobe or Microsoft, or both?) I have no idea. But this need to be fixed ASAP. This is unnacceptable, given that it's been weeks since this has started to happen. You'd think that being the juggernaut they are, Adobe would have the resources to tackle this issue quickly. This is bad. And I'm not saying this because I'm inconvenienced by the issue. This is a MAJOR issue that renders an application almost useless. Seriously Adobe?

You have given more useful information in this one post than Adobe support staff has given us in 11 days.....unless you think "We are aware of the issue.........."

Hello everyone,

Our team has identified a potential problem with the latest Windows security updates. Could you try uninstalling or rolling back those updates (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/how-to-uninstall-a-windows-update-c77b8f9b-e4dc-4e9f-a803-fdec12e59fb0) to see if they help?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Most of us if not all of us can't do that. I am using a work issued computer and our IT controls the updates. If I was to ask them, they would tell me NO and say it is a company mandate to run the latest.

Agreed, I'm in the same boat.
