I’m experiencing an issue with Adobe Illustrator where I cannot copy anything. Both Ctrl+C and right-click > Copy cause the software to crash immediately. This has been happening repeatedly throughout the day.
Could you please advise on the cause and any possible solution? It’s really frustrating that Illustrator can’t handle such a basic function like copying without crashing.
Hello @Nadia37972677f0tk,
We have received reports from several customers that the latest Windows Defender security intelligence update - 1.435.148.0 has potentially fixed this issue.
Could you try installing the update and letting us know if it helps?
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Also seems to be fixed. No fancy cloud tricks, old and new files, both V28 and V29.
Note that I installed this today:
2025-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5063875)
Through Windows Update.

Dang it, can't edit my post. Tried on a more complex file, using V29. Crashed,
but this time I did get the bug reporter and a suggestion to update to the latest, 29.7.1
Fingers crossed.

Yesterday I was able to copy and paste, and the problem is back again today. It's been a recurring issue for two weeks now and I don't see any response from Adobe. This should have been resolved by now.

Not ideal, but another option that works for me:

Open the corrupted file and re-save it. After you save it, the below window will show up. Uncheck all boxes.
then work on the newly saved file.
This work-around appears to be working fine in our org.

Thanks @h.enizi, unfortunately it doesn't work for my organisation.

If the above does not work, saving file as .svg will also work. but of course it will compromise the quality for some users/projects where quality is critical.
Hopefully Adobe will fix this ASAP. till then we need to find work-arounds

Tried this with all 3 versions, didn't work

This option works great and seems to be the best solution outside of copy and paste.

Sorry I posted this on the wrong message. This option unfortunately doesn't work for me. It was the copy button usage on the "move object" pop up that works best for me.

Adobe released an update today, and it resolved the issue for me. I hope it did for everyone else as well.

I've been working for about an hour since the update. It mostly works, but occasionally crashes when I use the copy command(I always use shortcut Ctrl+C). Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.

After updating today (illustrator AND Windows) I can copy without crashing BUT when I paste the file is altered to black and white and misaligned with error lines running through images. The draging into another file workaround that previously worked is now crashes my PC.

After 8 hours of working with various AI files, everything seems to be functioning well for me. No crushes!!!

Some Illustrator files automatically freeze and close when copying text. I am facing this issue repeatedly on Adobe Illustrator version 29.7.1 running on Windows 10 Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.6093). I cannot uninstall or roll back Windows security updates, as these are managed by the company IT and cannot be removed. I need a proper solution from Adobe.

did you try to use 'Alt' instead of 'Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V' (temporarily)?

Windows defender appears to have updated at my workplace in the last 2 hours, removing this issue for now.

What would you suggest I do next? Should I wait for the upcoming Windows Defender update?
