Illustrator Crashes When Copying - Illustrator 29.6.1 / Win 11

Community Beginner ,
Jul 31, 2025 Jul 31, 2025

I’m experiencing an issue with Adobe Illustrator where I cannot copy anything. Both Ctrl+C and right-click > Copy cause the software to crash immediately. This has been happening repeatedly throughout the day.

Could you please advise on the cause and any possible solution? It’s really frustrating that Illustrator can’t handle such a basic function like copying without crashing.

Glad to see the issue is resolved.. thanks for the quick support! In cases where third party services like Microsoft are involved, it’d really help if coordination could be streamlined to speed things up. Hope it will not happen again. Have a good day everyone! ❤️

This morning (8/14), the problem appears to be resolved for me at the moment.

The IT organization at my company controls the Windows security, and the program auto-updates.

Mine and the rest of the team can confirm it all seems to be working again now.  Here's hoping this doesn't happen again.... it will take a long time to fully trust it after this debacle!

Thankfully the update from Microsoft fixed this issue and we all hope they won't break it again.

Hi @sutham_1326,

Thanks for sharing those details, and I'm really sorry to hear that Illustrator keeps crashing when you open a file.

Based on the error message, it looks like the crash is related to a Windows system component. If you’re seeing the Adobe crash reporter dialog when this happens, please go ahead and submit the report and share the email address you entered there, so I can check the logs with the team. Reference:
https://adobe.ly/3JozhfK

It would also help if you could try launching Illustrator in Safe Mode and from a new local admin user account, just to rule out any interference from system extensions or profile-related issues:
https://adobe.ly/46H8ght
https://adobe.ly/3JkVviK

In addition, please try running Illustrator in Windows Compatibility Mode by right-clicking the Illustrator shortcut, going to Properties > Compatibility, and checking the option for Run this program in compatibility mode.

Let me know how it goes.

Looking forward to your repsonse.

Abhishek

Hi @JoeGomez23,

I'm sorry to hear the issue is still happening. Could you confirm the exact Windows version you’re on and Illustrator version details? Confirm if Illustrator crashes with all files or only certain ones? Please also let me know if you see the Adobe crash reporter dialog when it happens and share the email address you entered there, so I can check the logs with the team. Reference: https://adobe.ly/4mhCcFV
If possible, try temporarily disabling any third-party plugins or antivirus software and see if the crash still occurs. Try the safe mode testing(link shared in my first response) and update. This will help narrow down what's causing it.

Let me know your findings, so we can move forward.

Abhishek

I'm not sure what happened, but the issue is fixed. There had been an update but it was from 8/8 when I was still having the issue. My main work around was saving my files as Cloud Documents where the issue never showed its face.

I should also add that I noticed if I open a new document, I can copy and paste just fine. Once the file is saved, however, it crashes when I try to copy.

The 1.435.148 Defender Antivirus update has resolved the issue for me.

What hasn't been resolved:

  • Why was this an issue in the first place? No other Adobe flagship products had the issue. What is it that Illustrator passes to the clipboard that Defender didn't like?
  • Will there be a change to Illulstrator to prevent this from happening again?
  • Two weeks with minimal communication to the user community is unacceptable. In future could we please be given a daily update so that we can advise our clients of delays?
  • Many users like me spent a significant number of hours trying to resolve, test and workaround the issue, losing a lot of time and delaying deliverables for our clients...

Issue persists.

Windows Defender seems to have no effect on whether Adove crashes or not.
And if the software is crashing on the regular, what am I paying a subscription for?
