Question

Illustrator Error "trying to read the linked file"

Hello Adobe Community!

I've been having this issue for quite a while and can't find an answer online.

Every time I open an Illustrator file which contains placed images I get "An error occured trying to read the linked file". Please note this is not an "unable to locate" error.

Whether I go through and locate the files or ignore, the "missing" images pop in at full size on top of the artwork, not in their original locations.

The files reside on a 2Tb LaCie SSD drive (which could be the issue?)

Illustrator version 28.7.1

2021 14" Mabook Pro M1Max, 2TB, 64Gb, Sequoia 15.0.1

I screen recorded what happens…  here's the link:

Thank you all in advance!

Enabling "Full Disk Access" as suggested seems to have worked. Thank you!

Hello,

My company has been having this issue for years and can never find the solution. Adding Illustrator to Full Disk Access has not resolved the issue. Are there any other possible solutions. The issue really is a problem when you want to have 2-3 files open at the same time that all have multiple linked images. Thanks

Hello @CMYKisOK,

I am sorry to hear about your experience. Would you mind confirming if Illustrator behaves this way with all files? If yes, kindly share more details, like the OS/Illustrator version, and a screen recording of your workflow so I can check it with the team?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello @TenWest Creative,

Sorry to hear about your experience, and thanks for sharing the screen recording. Would you mind trying to enable Full Disk Access for Illustrator (https://adobe.ly/3Y1MsHl) under System Preferences and then relaunching Illustrator to check if it helps?

Also, try moving the files to the internal hard drive and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
