Images not showing up!

96GB ram, M2 chip in MacBook Pro running 14.6.1. I had to give up on that file and recreated it from scratch. I must have hit some toggle somewhere by accident that blanked out the placed files and made line work not preview properly. 

I have continued playing with it and I think there is a bug in illustrator 28.6 - when i try to use the pen tool, it will draw a line with zero point width, but trying to change to a point size line width (1pt, for instance) it switches to preview mode and gives me the “Can’t finish previewing” message I  copied below. Illustrator has been running fine up until this latest version update.

I recently purchased a subscription to Adobe Stock, and I'm experiencing an issue when trying to download images as vector files. The images open in Illustrator, but they appear as raster images rather than vector files, making it impossible for me to work on them as needed.

Could you please assist me in resolving this issue? I would greatly appreciate any guidance on how to download the images correctly as vector files.
