Is it possible to rename a layer via keyboard shortcut, action, or script?

I am looking for a faster way to rename individual layers without taking my hands off the keyboard. I'm aware that there are ways to batch-rename many layers at a time using a script, but I'm talking about doing it one at a time.

Similar to if you

  • Double-clicked the layer name in the Layers Panel, or
  • Chose "Layer Options" from the Layers Panel menu

I can't find any way to do this that doesn't involve a mouse.

Thanks in advance

Assuming that the Layer item is highlighted in the Layers palette (which usually (but not always) is true if you select a corresponding object on the scratch area), you can call the Layer Options dialog with an action to which you can assign a keyboard shortcut.
