Managing fonts and the dropdown font list Question

Hello.

MACPro, 10.14.1

Adobe Ill, 2019,  23.0.1

I work in Film and TV as a graphic designer. We have strict guidelines on which fonts we are allowed to use.  Recently (this season) we were banned from using Adobe fonts, which is annoying to say the least (and I could rant on this topic for hours).  We are only allowed to use fonts from basically a 3rd party website that has been approved by the legal department of our studio.  yea boring fonts!

My issue is this:

• I have a lot of fonts I've downloaded with TypeKit, I also have a lot of system fonts that are native to MACOSX.  We can legally use the system fronts  from OSX but not Adobe Fonts. It's really hard to differentiate between the two sets when I'm in Illustrator.

• I've downloaded and installed a lot of fonts from our approved 3rd party site and have separated them in their own category within font book.

• I've never used a font manager before and don't really know where to start.  What I'd like to do is limit the fonts that adobe Illustrator shows in the front drop down menu to just the 3rd Party fonts I've downloaded and separated in font book.  Is this possible?

I've tried disabling fonts in Font book but I want my system to have full access to all fonts and illustrator to have limited action.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Thanks guys.  I have a font manager... well i guess I would call it a font manager.  IT's Font Book For mac.  It let's me create sets and turn them on and off but It seems to make no difference in illustrator.  Illustrator always has all my fonts and then some it seems as there are all kinds of foreign fonts in there as well that I'd love to not see.

Thanks guys for the answers.  It's much appreciated.

I use a font manager (Font Agent Pro) You can separate your font manager into categories easily and you can turn those folders on and off easily. I am not sure if you can set it up to just have certain fonts open when in Illustrator but maybe by investigating Smart Sets you could accomplish your task

    smart set

Dynamic collection of fonts that match one or more rules that you specify. Updates automatically as you add and delete fonts from your FontAgent client database.

I don't know how you've gotten along without a font manager, I use mine every day!! I think it might be a revolution for you.

    Good luck!

As far as I know illustrator will nor sort this out for you.

This will start a lengthy debate on which is the best font management software.

They all have good points and bad ones.

Personally, I like Font Agent Pro. It works for me and does what I need it to do (turn off the fonts I don't need, activate the ones I need, when I need then and let me organise them in groups). I am not working or selling this additional software.

I suggest you test it on a separate computer so it is not messing up your current setup risk free. Make sure you have a backup of your system and test it safely.
