paintbrush tool not working

I cant seem to use my paintbrush tool. until starting illustrator today it was fine. now one the tool is selected when i hover over the image i wish to paint on i get a grey and black no entry symbol come up. does any one know what might have happened or can give me advice? thank you

nope - got frustrated so i closed it all, shut down my pc and restarted and it sorted itself. a worrying glitch none the less.

Are there brushes in the brushes panel?

If not, you will need to add at least one.

Hello, my paintbrush tool is not working. I have read through all the comments and different sites. And my 2021 illustrator page does not look like anybody else's. I do not know how to fix this.

You opened a JPEG.

Try and create a new file. Then place the JPEG in it.

Please use your system's tool to make screenshots. Yours is barely legible.
