Pin Text to shapes like in adobe premiere

I have been trying to figure this out for ever! In Adobe Premeire, under the essential graphics tab, you can pin a shape to text so that when you change the text, i.e. change "dog" to "elephant" the shape adjust with the text keeping them aligned.  Can this be accomplished in Adobe Illustrator?

You can add a rectangle behind the text with effects in the Appearance panel (and save it as a Graphic Style for later use).

AH, yes, I see now.

Not exactly, at least in my experience. I assume you are aware that you can apply a color to an area text box, and set the type inset amount using the Area Type Options dialog box. The issue with area text, however, is that the shape of the box doesn't change with the type, so not quite the solution you're looking for. But at least not a group of type + box that you have to mess with.

Note too, that if you apply these attributes to an area text box and convert it to point type, your edits go away.

Maybe someone else has a more elegant way to do it, or a way to do it the way Premiere does it.

That would be a handy feature, be sure to suggest it! I will for sure vote for that one. I mean, it can be done in Powerpoint, I'm sure Adobe can make it happen. 🙂

OHHHH wait. Playing around with what I told you earlier... if you turn on the preference to "Auto Size New Area Type" the area type box will change shape with the size of the type. I think this will do what you are looking for!!

I think what you might be asking is how to wrap text around an object, or adjust the shape of a text box. Or maybe type on a path? This link may help--covers all the ways to create editable type.

Thanks for your response.  I know how to wrap text or typ on a path.  I am wondering if I can pin text to a shape, such as a rectangle. WHe designing a newsletter i may reuse shapes as backgrounds for text. normally I either have to type the text then resize and align the rectangular background to encompass text. I'd like to be able to just duplicate the text and shape, retype the text, and have the shape automatically adjust to the text. Hopefully that makes sence.
